You see those crazies, err, hearty souls? Those are the elite runners, the first wave in this morning's Pikes Peak Ascent, a half-marathon footrace to the top of Pikes Peak, 14,115 feet above sea level (the marathon, which is up and back, takes place tomorrow.)
A maximum of 1800 runners are participating this morning (the cutoff is enforced by the United States Forest Service.)
The very first Ascent was held in 1936, and was won by Lou Wille in 3:00:55. Agnes Nelleson won the women's race in 6:42.
With all of the crap going on in the world these days, it's nice to see people doing something positive. Good luck to them.

Even when I was running 70 miles a week I had no desire to do this.

@infatuatedbby - Oh no, these are actual, sanctioned races. People come from all over to do them.

@mawdest - When I was walking back from the liquor store, the race clock was at four hours eleven minutes. The fifth place guy was just coming in. A girl that went to my high school won the women's marathon.

Positivity is great! I commend anyone who runs - I think everyone who tries is a winner. I think the world would be a lot better if people would just channel their energy into something like this - or - if you are unable to run, (like me) - find another hobby

Good lord that's a steep climb, I hope they at least have smooth roads to follow. I am not fond of heights so I will wish them well from here.

Other than the first mile and a half or so, it's a trail all the way up.

That's running uphill for 12 miles. I just never had the desire to do it.
