As twilight falls near 10 AM in Eugene...a sidelight

Yes, it is here and interesting to watch outside (with the right glasses) or on TV. A couple of interesting things are that: Our credit union is not opening until noon today so employees can view the eclipse with family and also that our local Trader Joe's is closing from 8:45 until 11 AM so its employees can watch without distraction. I wonder how many businesses across the country are doing this for employees? It is a pretty nice thing! Got a lot cooler now with the sun almost gone!

I was thinking of you as I know you are in a prime spot! I don't know if they are doing that for employees here (Los Angeles), but the kids are locked up in their classrooms . . . our district is keeping everyone indoors for safety reasons.

@JamesHxstatic Oh yah, some kids did skip school. Some of my son's friends went to one of the local libraries as they had a solar eclipse party. But I know the teachers were going to livestream the eclipse from the classroom (not the same, but at least seeing it). Going to Griffith Park would have been cool, but it was probably packed.

I remember when we had a total eclipse in 1999 that the stores and offices closed to allow people to see the eclipse.

@JamesHxstatic It's an event that most people will only witness one time in their life, a lot better than give people a day to see a match of football.

I had no idea that businesses did that sort of thing until now. Very nice!

My daughter in Arizona- is working with a company that is having a party and a hat contest and letting the employees off for an hour or so.

@JamesHxstatic The company that she now works for sounds totally with it as far as how to treat the peons. My eclipse experience here wasn't much to write home about. My living room got dark, the outside had more shadows and it was a tid bit darker but not much to holler about.

@RichardMeister It is still customary in some cultures to stay indoors and avoid the whole thing. It is seen as a bad omen. (Reminds me of that friend you mentioned).

@JamesHxstatic When I was a kid I can remember an eclipse where it got very dark. Everyone stayed in the house and all the drapes were pulled so no one could look at the sun but we had to turn the lights on. I was working inside during the 1979 eclipse so I don't remember how dark it got then since the lights were always on in the building.

That's a very cool thing! I hadn't realized that stores would do that. Irony alert: We're experiencing our first cloudy day in something like three months here.
