A Horse-Drawn Hearse in an Ancient Church

On our travels through France we came across this church in Agonac which has its roots in Roman times. It is an impressive church with a massive dome inside with a rope leading up through a hole in the centre to the bell. We both aching to give the rope a good tug but unfortunately we didn’t think we could make a quick enough getaway in our old motor-home. Inside the church against one wall was a horse-drawn hearse. The body of the hearse had rollers which would have allowed easy entry of the coffin. I wonder what its history is?

@judyev I'd feel a bit silly being carried along in one of those. I saw one recently in Belfast pulled by white horses with pink plumes, and another pulled by black horses with white plumes. I also saw a very ornate one in Naples many years ago during a thunderstorm making its way past a communist demonstration. The occupants of all three were oblivious to the stir they were creating.

@JudyEv Totally oblivious. No gratitude at all.

White horses with pink plumes seems a bit out of place. And the occupants didn't sit up and take notice?

Is this the fortified Church of Saint-Martin d'Agonac? I think to remember that the cemetery is attached to the Church.

We didn't go into the cemetery but I am sure your memory is correct.

I would have loved to pull that rope, too! lol I am sorry for any horses that have to pull carriages.

It's not a hard life for some depending on the carriage and the circumstances.

I don't think you would have been able to either. That's an awesome looking hearse. I would love to know it's history too and when the last time was it held a coffin.

I have seen one that was quite primitive with dowels from a chair back used as part of its make-up.

It's still possible to go to your last resting place in this way - but like all things, it would cost.

It's history being hauling away the last people that pulled the rope!

Quite possibly! I wish we'd had a fast getaways vehicle.
