Clothes for Button the Koala

We have a good friend in Austria and went to see her recently. We first met her when she and her then partner were couch-surfing in Australia. As we have no grandchildren of our own, our friend kindly ‘lends’ her 4 ½ year old daughter as a substitute grandchild. When we visited we took a stuffed koala with us. My friend also wanted some help with some crochet squares that she was trying to make. I decided to make a sleeveless vest for the koala with some of the scrap wool. It was very quick to make and I had it done in no time. The koala has been named ‘Button’ so I put a big ‘B’ on the back of the vest. The little girl thought she’d like sleeves so sleeves were duly added. Then she thought he really needed trousers so trousers were duly made. Although Button’s legs were very short, he has a very big backside and the pants took a bit of effort together with quite a bit of unpicking before they more or less fitted. They were a bit loose so we added a multi-coloured belt to keep them up. We also ran out of wool for the pants so Button has a big red patch on his backside now. He has now been taken to kindergarten to be shown off to our little friend’s playmates.

Button is so cute with clothes on We also have a stuffed polar bear Xiao Bai at home and it is my son's friend. My mom sometimes also makes some clothes, trousers and caps for our Xiao Bai. I am glad that Button is also so lucky to find such a lovely family to adore it

I can imagine Xiao Bai looking really cool/warm all dressed up. Have you put up a photo of him yet?

It was nice to think that she liked him. It's always a bit difficult trying to choose gifts for children you've only met once or twice.

Thanks for the compliment. Crochet is so quick to do and for me it is easy. Yes he has Velcro on his hands and he can sometimes be 'attached' to a chair back or similar if his arms will reach.

I like Button, the little koala must be very happy, no more cold nights in the cold Austrian weather.

We have to send them some CDs when we return to Australia. I will make a scarf and send that over too. I can make a scarf without needing Button to measure it on.

@JudyEv Not sure. Unless you mean in the zoo? I haven't been to a zoo in ages.

@KristenH You say you collect stuffed koalas so I wondered where you found them. I don't think I've seen any Australian stuffed animals over here.

Until I saw the photo, I thought you meant a real Koala. I've heard they can be kind of mean. Better a stuffed one!

Thanks. It is no big deal for me really but the pants were a bit of a challenge. My friend reckoned Button looked like he was wearing one of those padded pants - but he had filled it!

We're back in Australia now and I've crocheted Buttons a scarf which we'll post shortly with a few other bits and pieces. Crocheting is so quick to do, much faster than knitting.
