I remember growing up and hearing so many "crazy" statements from my parents or teachers. For example: I had to wait at least 30 minutes to go in the water after eating. Why? We had to have 8 hours of sleep every night, Was that a law? The clothes had to come off the clothes line before dinner. I had to have the living room all dusted and vacuumed before going to the football games with my friends. There were so many funny ones and I could not understand them all. Did you ever hear any funny ones?

Don't cross your eyes, or they'll get stuck that way. Why was this even a concern? Make your bed when you get up every morning. Why, you're just going to mess it up again that night when you go to sleep! haha

I forgot about the one with the eyes getting stuck if we crossed them. I heard that one many times to. How about don't swallow our chewing gum as our ribs are going to stick together.

@ramapo17 I had heard the one about not swallowing our chewing gum, but not that it would cause our ribs to stick together. I always heard that our stomachs couldn't digest the gum, and so it would stay in our stomachs for many years.

@moffittjc Don't you wonder where these people got all the crazy sayings? I hope I don't get like that.

It's a good rule to sleep 8 hours per night, this is something every doctor will confirm. Waiting 30 minutes to go in the water is fully wrong, or you go immediately or you wait until you have digested the food that is in your stomach, that means at least a couple of hours.

I know what the doctors recommend for sleep but I lived the last years of my career getting possibly 6 hours a night. I worked from 4am to 1pm and I lived an hour away from work. In the summer it was impossible to fall asleep when it was so light out and people in the neighborhood were outside. I never took a nap when I got home either.

@ramapo17 I have never been able to sleep 8 hours, I am a very bad sleeper and I cannot take naps, I wake up with a headache. The most I can sleep is 5 to 6 hours, but I know I would feel better if I could sleep longer.

For me it was an hour after eating. I think that was to avoid cramps. I think your mother wanted to be sure the dusting was done before you went to the football games. I'm guessing the clothes had to come off the line before dinner to avoid the dew of night.

I think it was so the neighbors wouldn't have to see them when they got home from work.

@ramapo17 That could be too. I wouldn't want my neighbors to see my underwear hanging on the line.
