Be safe if you are in Hurricane Harvey's path

I have been in many big hurricanes in my lifetime and remember having to evacuate our home when I was a young child. The water came in the kitchen and eventually worked its way through the house. We were lucky to get out when we did and went to my aunt and uncles in another town. I don't remember how long we were there but being a kid it felt like forever. As the years went by I have experienced many hurricanes and the last huge one was Sandy. We lived in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania on the border of New Jersey. We still had the rain and wind and I thought it wasn't so bad. When I got to my dads in New Jersey I was shocked to see it looked like a war zone. My dad was 92 at the time and lived alone. Last year, now living in Florida, my husband and I had to leave our community and went across the state to my friends house where we stayed a few days. We had no idea what we were in for when we got home but we lucked out and only had power outages and some landscape messes. Today our thoughts and prayers go out for all the people in Texas as this huge storm is approaching. My nephew is right in that area and he has 3 children. I haven't heard anything about them yet but I will keep trying. I know we have some MyLotters living in Texas and to all of you, be safe and our prayers are with you. Please check in here to let us know you are alright.

We left our home in Melbourne, Florida last year and went to the gulf side at my girlfriends and we didn't get anything by her house. When we got home a few days later we had lots of trees down and lost power which made us throw out all the food we had in a big freezer chest. That was nothing compared to Sandy when it hit New Jersey. They are still recovering from that and many people lost their homes.

It seems that all the hurricanes in the last few years keep getting worse and worse. According to out tv news it is suppose to be worse than any others. I just saw some footage on the tv where some older boys were on their bikes looking at the water. They should be getting out of there by now.

I've been through plenty of hurricanes myself. Last year, I had to deal with both Hermine and Matthew. Prior to that, 2004 was a horrible year, as we got hit with Tropical Storm Bonnie, and Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Jean. One hurricane a year is bad enough, but to get slammed by three in a row is just ridiculous. But we survived! I was not in south Florida when Hurricane Andrew hit, but I was part of the response team that went in afterward. There was just nothing left when we got there. No trees, no houses, no buildings. I have no idea how people survived that storm!

In all the hurricanes down here was there any as bad as this one? We had Katrina in the northeast that was very bad and some houses were never fixed. It was devastating. By my dads house it looked like a war zone.

@ramapo17 Hurricane Andrew was the worst hurricane to ever hit Florida, and one of the worst ever in the United States. I wasn't kidding when I said there was nothing left when we got there to help. We couldn't identify neighborhoods because there was nothing left standing to serve as landmarks. It was total devastation.

@moffittjc I am glued to the tv watching about the hurricane. I have been up so late every night and I am getting to look like I have been on a drinking binge.

@Courtlynn I have been trying his sister all day and she doesn't answer her cell. I hate when that happens as I always imagine the worst.

@just4him This happens with all big storms and blizzards. People just don't think it is better to be safe than sorry.
