Look what we made!

In September Big One will be starting high school. This feels like a big step, we are all a little bit nervous about it I think. We went to the transition evening and came home with a long list of uniform to buy and stationery to put together. And the school is very strict about the pupils having the right equipment with them every day. By the time we’d collected together all the coloured pencils, highlighters, protractors, pens, calculator etc. on the list there was too much to fit into a standard-size pencil case. And in any case bought pencil cases are never long enough to hold the standard-size 30 cm ruler. So we decided to make one. We cut the top off an old pair of jeans, found a sturdy zip the right size in my collection (I always save all the buttons, zips etc. from worn-out clothes before I recycle them) and made a long pencil case. Then Big One cut out some shapes from a scrap of left-over fabric and we appliquéd them on. The result is plenty big enough to hold everything – and it certainly won’t get confused with anyone else’s. Big One is really pleased with it, and so am I because it didn’t cost anything and used up a few of the scraps I have lying around! And of course Big One leaned a bit about sewing and making things and solving problems in a creative way! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2017.

That is way cool!! Since the school is so fussy about everything - what did they think of that pencil case?

We don't know yet. They haven't mentioned any rules about the style of bags or pencil cases but we will find out in a couple of weeks!

I love it! It's so cute... You are all just so creative... Her friends would probably want one too when they see hers... What year level do high schools start there? Recently they started with year 7 for high school down here... When I see them walking to/from school, they look awfully young to me to be in high school...

Thank you! Yes it's year 7 here too - does that mean the same thing - age 11?

@Fleura I was thinking of craft markets, not big business.

That's probably true, I can imagine they might sell quite well. It's the kind of thing a teenager could easily do to sell at craft markets and make some pocket money - or you could go for the other extreme and hire a factory in Vietnam to make them, but that wouldn't be the same. For a regular business though I think it's too time-consuming to be very lucrative.

@MALUSE I'm sure you're right, it's the kind of thing I would like to do but I just don't have time.

Thank you! I wonder whether we could start a side-line in recycled pencil cases?

Thank you! Big One has suddenly developed an interest in earning money (never was interested in pocket money before) because now she wants to pay for art classes - maybe she could make a few herself to sell!
