My son surprised me!

So, I was talking to my son, actually we were texting, about the apartments I saw and how I really liked them., and he should look at them etc. He said he is thinking of getting a house! He mentioned a certain dollar figure and his dad told him he could get a house in Springfield..Umm, in that area close to the metro..Any house in his price range would probably have been built in the 60's and is probably a money pit. I told him he better think about it. I can't believe I have a son old enough to buy a house.! Were you surprised when your children first bought a house?

As I have no children I cannot imagine the feeling. We bought our house when I already was in my 40's.

@snowy22315 We rented an apartment when we lived in Monte-Carlo, impossible to buy anything there, it was too much expensive.

I see people buy houses from the 1920s and cannot help thinking it's going to cost thousands in repairs.

Maybe not in repairs..but those kinds of houses don't use heat efficiently. I am afraid it would cost a fortune to heat them.

Neither of my boys have bought a house and I very much doubt that they ever will. I hope your son thinks long and hard before committing to a house although it would be a great thing if he bought one.

@snowy22315 It's good to take the time to look at many houses and get just the right one for the right price. But I bet he is anxious to get one,.

My son and his wife bought their first house five years ago soon after they got married. They were in their early twenties at the time. I was very proud of them to have their lives do together at such a young age.

It is a very serious decision to make for sure. Both our sons have their own houses with their girlfriends.

I mentioned perhaps his GF could help him with the house..but he thought it was too premature.. Apparently, she lives with her mother..and feels she is needed at home..so who knows?

I hope he gets a good house for himself. When our older son bought his first co-op in Manhattan, we were shocked at the cost, but helped him out with the down payment. Our younger son lived with us after college so he could work and save up for a newly built house. I cried when he moved out.

Some people rent forever,,I have some relatives who both had good jobs that didn't buy a house for many years. They were probably in their 50's when they bought their first house.

By the age of 35 I owned 3 houses, bought all of them from the owners, straight out. I think that is awesome because he will not waste all that money paying rent and it will go into the house, and when he wants to sell the market maybe up and he can double what he paid. Or he can keep it and rent it out... CRAP I should no say waste money on rent, I have rentals . Naaa, I know there are people who will always rent, some just do not want to keep up a home of their own and I can understand that. OHHH and the prices are still down right now, good time to buy. No matter the age I own a very old house, gotta have good bones and it`ll last and last.

He just doesn't seem like the "buy a house type" to me. Well, anyway..he does what he does I guess.
