Favorite "Silent" Songs #3 - "Breaking the Silence"

It was a very slow day at our yard sale. Hopefully, tomorrow will be better, as an annual Arts Festival is being held this weekend. Anyway, we are at #3 in my Favorite "Silent" Songs series, which consists of songs with "silent" or "silence" in the title. The third spot belongs to "Breaking the Silence" by Queensryche. From their superb 1988 concept album, Operation: Mindcrime, "Breaking the Silence" was that album's first single, but it failed to chart anywhere. The song is a huge part of the story, regardless of chart performance. Briefly, the record is about a recovering heroin addict named Nikki, who is fed up with everything, so much so that he joins an underground revolution as an assassin. As Nikki becomes involved with Sister Mary, a nun and former prostitute, whom he is ordered to kill. "Breaking the Silence" happens after the murder. Unaware that Sister Mary is dead due to memory loss, he searches for her, screaming for her in the night. Operation: Mindcrime is, in my opinion, one of rock music's finest concept albums. I've linked to the official video. Enjoy! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

I listened to a bit of the song, not my kind of music though, but, the singer has a very powerful voice and your description of the song meaning is quite amazing. A lot of songs now seem to have words that just repeat themselves. When I was younger I used to listen to Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and stuff. Have you ever heard of Rainbow. I hope you had better luck with your yard sale.

@teamfreak16 It`s been a long time since I`ve heard much rock music. I went to a Rainbow concert in Edinburgh quite a long, long time ago. But I used to listen to White Snake a lot more. Now though, I love TRex and still listen to it sometimes on YouTube, if I feel like it.

@scarlet_woman - He's one of my favorite vocalists. I would go see him, but I wouldn't go see them without him.

I have Mindcrime on my iPod. I blast it all the time. I haven't heard anything they've done since they fired Geoff Tate, though.

They sure have all the Van Halen "Panama" / "Jump" videos moves down, don't they? And I don't really associate Queensryche with the word silence. Not bad at all!

For such a serious metal band, they do have some moves, don't they?

This reads more like a film than a record. Sounds really intriguing.

They probably could make a movie based on this album. I'd watch it.

This (Operation: Mind crime) was the first Queensryche album I ever bought. I got to see them perform it in its entirety in 1995.
