Happenings In My Sons Lives

Back in April I mentioned that my son Sam who is 26 was going to be losing his job of 4 years because the grocery store he works at was being sold, and if not sold then closed. Well it didn't get sold and it's closing today. He quit about 3 weeks ago as a new Amazon Fullfillment Center opened north of our town about 30 miles, and he got a job there thankfully. The warehouse is huge, 850,000 square feet. Apparently the construction workers still have some work left to finish but they opened for business on August 20th. I heard they hired 3000 people and are bringing the new hires in several hundred people a week until they are all there. My son was in the first batch and started on August 20th. He has now been there for 2 weeks. He has a great schedule, he works 10 hour days from Sunday thru Wednesday, and is off Thursday, Friday and Saturday unless he works overtime. The benefits are fantastic, he has health, eye, and dental insurance, he gets stock in Amazon for certain things, paid vacation and he is making over 3 dollars an hour more than he was making at the grocery store. He is currently in inventory, counting stuff all day long. He says it's boring but for the money he makes he said he can take boring. He also asked to be cross trained so last week he also did another job they call water spider. Where he moves pallets of bins from place to place. It's really hard work but he can handle it. There are currently 3 Amazon Fullfillment Centers in Illinois with 6 more planned throughout the state. It's good stuff Illinois needs the jobs. My younger son Danny did receive his Masters Degree in Astro Physics and got a job in the Insurance Sector in June. He works for a company that does software for Insurance companies across the country. He is still a bit confused as to how it all works but slowly he is understanding what to do for his job. He is getting paid a handsome salary with great benefits as well. He loves being done with school and just being a regular guy with a job. He has used his free time off wisely and is having loads of fun with his friends, which he didn't have the time for when he was working towards his Masters Degree. He is a much happier guy these days and that makes me and his father much happier too. He was under a lot of stress while in school and I'm pleased that stress has been removed. All in all the whole family is happier these days, me and my husband don't worry so much about the boys, and they are happier with their respective new jobs. All is right with the world. Sam is my oldest at 26 and he is the bearded one in the pic, Danny is my youngest at 25 and is the other one in the pic.

Good looking boys. I'm glad Sam was able to get that job with Amazon. Danny's job sounds good also. Yes, all's right with your world.

@just4him I read somewhere that over the past couple of months Amazon has hired 50 thousand people for their warehouses. We need more businesses like this to help with all the horrible unemployment.

Yes it is, nothing worse than worry about your kids. We all want everything for our kids and it's great when things work out. The job market in Illinois is not the greatest so Amazon opening their 3rd warehouse is a boon to us. Apparently Amazon has plans for 6 more across the state.

@fishtiger58 Of course you do, we all want that for our children. No the worry isn't healthy, but there becomes a point in our lives as parents, where we have to let that worry go, and allow them to make their own way. Our son knows the value of a dollar as a result of doing without and saving for things. He got married last weekend and is out in British Columbia currently on his honeymoon. He is showing more independence each and every day. Any time that he went away in the past, he'd ask us to dog-sit for him, this time he hired a doggie-sitter. We would have done it, but its nice to see him managing, that's what Dad and I have always done.

Thanks so much. Amazon has 3 warehouses in Illinois with plans for 6 more. Illinois really needs the jobs as people are moving out of this state in droves. I read somewhere recently that they hired like 50 thousand people across the country in recent months. Awesome.

It's so nice to read about a family doing well, especially your grown sons. Having jobs and managing their own lives in a responsible way is a good reflection, too, on their parents. You have a lot to be proud of. Very nice read! P.S. Your sons are quite handsome young men.

So true especially in Illinois. So happy with Amazon hiring my son. I wasn't horribly worried about my younger son finding a job with his education, but my older boy didn't go to college, school was tough for him. But he is my gentle soul and deserved a break which Amazon gave to him. I am so very grateful.
