One of my favourite sweet treats is the humble caramel square, or Millionaire's Shortbread. One of the best-tasting, if a little pricey, versions of this confection is that sold in Costa Coffee shops in the UK, like the one pictured above. I'll occasionally pause for 15mins from the Saturday shopping routine and take a coffee and one of these.... There are others than Costa's tasty titbit, some equally yummy, others perhaps a little heavy on the sugar, or light on the biscuit base, or stingy on the chocolate... If you're into this particular sweet treat, where have you had a remarkably tasty one?

The last remarkably tasty one? At home There is a very nice patisserie not far from home, they make great rum babas, this is something I like.

@pgntwo I tried them, well... it's nothing like the real thing. The baker in our patisserie is from Napoli, this is why the babà he makes are really good.

@LadyDuck Perhaps I have yet to experience the perfect rum baba, I shall watch out for it on any occasion when I get to dine out...

It has been a long time since I had a good rum baba. The last one I had was one of those shown here - it was tasty enough, but lacking something...

@vandana7 The human body is funny that way - all through one's teens, ane can eat what one pleases, and on into the twenties - then one day in your mid-forties, you wake up and find you cannot close the button on your jeans anymore... sigh

One of the tastiest kinds of cakes here is honey cake. It is always moist and tender and never too sweet. Here is a photo of it.

@gntwo A noble confection indeed, though not everywhere gets it right. I'm not too keen on many of the vatieties sold in supermarkets. Costa certainly does a good job.

I tried some from the locals' bakery of choice in Foyle Street here recently - poor! Lidl's also are on the thin and over-sweet side. I must hunt down the elusive M&S version, that's bound to be good...

We stopped at a French patisserie this morning and each choose a yummy morsel. Not sure of the names. We shared one and tonight we'll share the other. We might have to do the same tomorrow as it will be our last chance.

Steh-café Am Krokodil, Freiburg
I imagine it would be extremely difficult to get me out of a French patisserie without at least three items to take home... So it is in many of the small bakeries I have had the good fortune to visit when in Germany over the years. The Steh-cafés there, standing cafés, also do quite tasty cakes to purchase and take home ;)

I've never heard of Costa's or the caramel square... And I don't take coffee breaks! I don't mind a small honey bun with soda or water, though. (Usually I drink grapefruit juice but that would just taste nasty after eating a bite of something sweet! )

Coca-cola Corp certainly have heard of'em, so much so they bought the whole chain, lock stock and cappuccino this week.
Coca-Cola Co has agreed to buy coffee chain Costa for $5.1 billion to extend its push into healthier drinks and take on the likes of Starbucks and Nestle in the booming global coffee market.

@MALUSE I think the savoury dishes in Italian cuisine by far outweigh the desserts. Apart from ice cream, always good, Italian ice creams.

I have not encountered it in Germany, but then there are so many sorts of cheesecake, I have little need to revert to my old ways...

I hope you would not be disappointed - I have found many that come nowhere near the mark, this one is one of the better ones, if not the best:
See how we make each layer of this all time Costa favourite. But please be warned: this video is dangerously appetising.
