Lavender

Canada

While Camping my sister had heard of a lavender farm near Lake George. It was a long drive from where we were camping but it was a beautiful drive and a beautiful place to visit. There were acres of both purple and white lavender. I had never seen white but I was told there its grown in England and used in food for flavor. It was growing in New York too. My sister and I both bought a bouquet of lavender to take home. On our way back to camp I saw a Coleman Store in Lake George so we pulled off the highway and spend some time and money in it. Years ago for my birthday my best friend gave me a Coleman folding chair. I love it and didn't know my sister was in love with it until that day. She walked right up to the chair section of this big store and found similar to mine and she bought it. When we got home to camp we hung our lavender under one of our pop up tents we use for pour home away from home. This story continues to tomorrow or when ever I get it written... a hint of what is going to happen...the lavender never made it home from camp. The name of the lavender farm is Lavenlair Farm, if the link below doesn't work you can look for it on line. I'm thinking they don't have a web site, just a photo if you google Lavender Farm in NY State.

Lavender has the most wonderful fragrance, I am sorry it didn't make back home with you. I am happy your sister now has the same chair. :)

We always go to coleman for our stuff, not our tents but all the smaller things. I'm thinking I need to grow lavender, it doesn't like a lot of water so I think it would grow here ...

I use regular purple lavender in food. In France there were fields and fields of lavender but I cannot remember I have ever seen the white variety.

Can't wait to hear what happened to your lavender and I'm hoping a bear didn't come along and steal it. Coleman does make great things for camping so shopping in a Coleman store for you would probably be like Disneyland

Sounds like a wonderful day. Now I'm going to have to go see online about that coleman folding chair.

You know how round most folding camp chairs are, and they are truly not comfortable in many situations, the Coleman chair is flat. Here is the one my sister bought, mine doesn't have a table attached.

Oh bummer so this is the lavender you spoke of in your camp insanity getting ruined. My dad has a house in Lake George.

@PainsOnSlate that sounds like a wonderful experience! We went every summer for a few days on vacation and always wanted to live there when we grew up. I still live in the town I grew up in but my dad spends most his time in his house in Lake George. I have only been there once last summer. Hopefully we will make it there next summer.

That picture is beautiful. I can just imagine how it smelled as you were driving by. I have never been to a Coleman store, I bet it was a campers dream!

Coleman is our go to company for camping needs, I was awed by the size of the store and the wonderful things they sell....The farm was fun to see and we learned a lot about growing lavender...the biggie is it doesn't need a lot of water and if over-watered it will die...

We have a lavender farm nearby here in Connecticut. I personally don't care much for the smell of lavender but I do enjoy the look of it.

What a shame the lavender ended up in the mud. There are a few small lavender farms around here too.

I've only been to one other and it was on the west coast. it was huge and had been there for a long time, the one we say this summer is brand new and we will have to visit it again later after it grows up. We were sad to see the lavender in the mud too...

The only information of lavender I got is just helping for sleeping. I don't know if could be used in flavor, and even in white color. Often I see is in purple. Few months ago, I just bought some seeds of lavender and planned to do some planting. But I didn't know how to make it work. In my area, there is always a lot of rains in long summer.

You could try growing it in pots, keeping them away from the rain, they thrive on very little rain. I had only seen the purple before going to this farm.

What a beautiful picture and a nice story, I love lavender. Nice day with your sister. Sounds wonderful to me. Glad you could both go. We took our children to Lake George for summer vacation for many years when they were young. Lots of good memories

I grew up near Lake George and spend a lot of time there. I babysat a farm family that had 4 boys, their camp was on an island in the Lake and it was delightful.

We were in Sparta a few years ago and chanced upon a lavender farm in that area, but as luck would have it they had just closed. One of these days we'll get there. How long did your cut lavender last?

If you try again just know lavender does not like water, it takes very little to keep it alive and if watered too much it will die...I learned that while visiting this lavender farm...

I'm not sure how one uses lavender in cooking. I'm one of those people who is scent sensitive. I find the scent overpowering and end up with a headache.

I've never used it in cooking but i do like the scent. I am sensitive to perfume so I don't wear it, I know how annoying it is to be around strong scents.
