Borderline Discussions

Recently I have been seeing some real borderline discussion on the site. All one person can talk about is being drunk all the time. Now today I see a post asking our advice about what contraceptive they should be using. What next? I know the site is set up like a personal blog site. But would you really ask everyone in the world what contraceptive you should be using? I don’t think so. Furthermore, I don’t care how much you drink or how drunk you get. In one post I read it almost sounded like the person wanted to commit suicide. Right after this they admit they were drunk and wrote this post. I personally feel that the guidelines need to be revised a little. We need to outline what is acceptable and what isn’t. I understand over time these posts get deleted and reported. But not before a lot of people have read them and responded to them. How do you feel? Do you think these types of posts are acceptable on MyLot?

I don't usually waste my time on a lot of those types of discussions, but some days there isn't anything else to read. When someone crosses the line I do report it.

You are right. At times there is not much else to read and these pop out at you. There are one after another and nothing else in between. So you end up opening one of them to see what it really is.

No, but I do understand why this happens. Some members are so desperate to post that anything will suffice.

@poehere It is a common misbelief among new members. As a result they acquire very few responses to each post, which makes them desperately churn out more.

@Asylum 30 a day is a bit much. I guess they just make one post for one thought. Oh well the more the write the less they earn. Nobody will ever realize how this site really works.

I really think you are right. It is sad that they have to make 30 posts like this one after another.

I agree with you that the examples of posts you have mentioned are those kind of posts, which should not be started on this platform. There are various other sites to ask questions and to start such posts, users should search those sites on the net and should visit those sites.

@poehere Ideally speaking, mylot or any other such site should not be joined by those who are less than 18 years of age. However, administrators of such sites probably has no way to check the actual age of a user, therefore, some users fake their age. I agree with you that some posts are not meant for a 13 years old boy/girl but if a 13 year old boy/girl joins any site, we have no means to prevent him/her from not accessing the site.

I was under the impression that this site was open to all. No matter what age group. That the things we post here shoul be able to be read by all age groups. That was why I am questioning these type of post. I don't think a person of 13 should really read these types of things.

@DianneN Some people don't know what to do with their time. So they invent things online. I have never been one to believe all that people say online. They are so misleading and if you stick around long enough you will find out that their story changes a million times.

I must be living in a cocoon because I have not seen these posts you speak of. I suppose if they start putting restrictions on what cannot be written about, different people will want different things banned from the site then it will become a "where will it end" situation.

Maybe its tradition to accept the discussions and delete later. Awhile ago one mylotter his 5 discussions were deleted

I read this person's post. It was also deleted. He was claiming he did not break the rules in his post that were deleted. When asked what he wrote about he never said. There is a valid reason to delete posts and Admin does not do this without that reason. So he must of violated the rules to have them deleted.

I think we my lotters need to start actively policing what they read and report what they feel inappropriate. It might also help the administration redefine some guidelines knowing how we feel.

I personally won't ask about contraceptives here in the site. I do not see it as a violation though just really bad personal taste. Posts about being drunk is fine with me as well. It offers a few chuckles here and there. Done too much, it tends to be boring. If you see a post that you think is a violation of the rules of the site, by all means, go ahead and report it. The site admin will check the post and decide if it is indeed a violation or not.

Basically, I only report spam or post that state their question in the title and in the discussion only write why. These are the type I delete. I also tried to comment to this person and suggest that he write about something else. That all of his posts about being drunk all the time were getting old. He did not pay attention and kept on writing. After this I stoped to read or help.

Like I've aid a ka-zillion times, I don't read things I am not interested in. I think people write abut more personal things than contraceptives.

@poehere Sometimes the title makes it obvious, other times you do have to read a line or two. But if it is a topic I have no interest in for whatever reason I won't comment.

@AbbyGreenhill I understand. The point here I was making is that there are a lot of these posts recently. I can tell by the image, title and first two lines of the discussion if I would be interested in reading it or not. I skip so many of them and never open or read them. Basically, I am saying people have no morals or maybe it should be pride to post some of the things they post. I was a single mom and raise my daughter from the time she was 13 months on. If I had ever run across some of these posts she wrote I would be asking myself what went wrong. But also like you have said billions of times you can't change people. I am just happy that my daughter would never write some of this stuff that so many here write. Parent's today are busy and don't have time for their children. However, here on the site I have found some amazing parents and how they talk about their children and what they do with them. They are just like I was with my daughter. In the end you know for sure these children are growing up right and would never consider posting some of this stuff online.

I normally just read the first line and move on. There are many things I am not interested in and think they should not be posted. Most of them I just pass by and don't even bother to read at all. I just happened to open a few of them when I saw something really strange and was wondering about what was happening.

I am not sure why I opened it up. I guess it was a new member. I saw what she was writing about and yes I did think it was not a topic for this site. I feel if she had an issue or problem she shoul of gone to her mom to ask her advice. She was young I am sure of this one and I didn't feell ike it was up to us to give her such advice. I never answered on it.

Certain things should be kept in the family unit. She wanted our advice on birth control. I think it is up to her parents to do this one. When my daughter was younger I didn't want her to go and ask others. I took care of it myself with her. I think this is how it should be.

People with different ideology and management skills, there are some posts that shouldn't hit the page because it may not be educative nor participatory. What will influence the audience negatively should not be allowed here.

I just saw a few of these and with all the influence on the net these days I didn't think there should be more. Kids read stuff and immediately act on it. I see it here on the islands and how fast things change because of t this.

@poehere ..I guess you have a point there! I just wished that young people must be in the right mind when reading discussions here..I just don`t know when and how you can control people here in the internet world since we have our own brains to run, When decision has to be made on their bad times

I am only one person and this was my way of thinking. I am far from being old fashion. I just feel that certain things should be discussed with your parents and not on this site. If you give this young girl one answer and she follows you advice who knows what could happen in the end.

@m_audrey6788 It is not easy to control them. I am just sad that this person couldn't go and talk with her mom. I never was like this with my daughter. I was always open minded and no matter what she talked about I never got mad. I only gave advice and let her decide what was best for her.

I do understand your concern. Most of the time I'll ignore. Contraceptive advice could be considered something for a health website. As for drunkness coming from a line of Irish folk I would question whether it is hurtful or not. One thing for sure it does affect everyone and therefore is everyones business. Now isn't that be true?
@Bluedoll (16774)

@poehere I've seen that kind of thing too online. Do they think they can get expert advice off a internet social gathering. Even if they did it shouldn't qualify without some kind of disclaimer attached.
@poehere (15126)

@Bluedoll I fear nowadays some children are afraid to talk with their parents. Social media sites make it easy for them to seek advice. All I can say is that I was happy that my daughter and I had such an open communication and she could talk to me about anything and everything. She is an adult now, married with 2 children and she still comes to me for advice.I just wish more parents would try harder with their children. It isn't easy, but it's also not that hard. You just have to sit down and listen. I guess nobody has the time to do that these days. Sad.

It is true. Most people see these posts and skip them. I normally do too. It was just the way the contraceptive one was written that make me open it up. She seemed so young and should be talking with her mom and her doctor about this. Not us here on the site.
