Happy Onam

Onam is a special festival season in kerala. All malayalies celebrates it grandly. Only veggies on the special day and there is payasam also in that day. six or seven types of curries with veggies and rice serve in the leaf of plantain . Pookalm (floral decoration) is the other attraction of Onam . There is an interesting story behind this festival which is joined with myth. The Asura King Mahabali(Maveli) ruled Kerala Once upon a time.All the people are happy and there is no cheatness or lie any where.The envious Devas approached the Hindu God Vishnu and he take the incarnation of Vamana a very short person. He comes to Maveli and asks for gift from him. The great king says ask any thing. Vamana asks for 3 feet soil. Maveli understood the cheatness but he is firm in his word.He let him to do that.Vamana becomes a big figure that his head goes to sky top.1 step he measure Entire earth,2nd the sky and there is no space for 3 one . Maveli shows his head and Vamana put his feet on Maveli 's head and Maveli goes to down to earth called Pathalam.Vamana sanctioned 3 days in an year to see his people that we celebrates Onam.

@LadyDuck Payasam is a special dish like soup(but this is sweet) special one for Onam. I will post a pic of Payasam.

@shshiju Nice visual of the meal. Seems like a lot of work goes into planning it and also a deeper meaning attached to the entire feast. Can anyone partake or is it just for those of that faith?

@Freelanzer there are some dishes(curries) specially for the onam feast. If some body make a feast the whole dishes are attached to it. Or home the family can decide whether whole curries needed or avoid some dishes

There is other interesting thing with the feast . We serve the onam meal in plantain leaf we called nakila means tongue leaf. Like a tounge indicates all tastes like sweet , sour, salty,bitter,Astringent, Pungent all curries deal with the same different tastes and serves in the right position. It is healthy also.
