Country music -- past and present -- took a beating today, losing two well-known names. I'll detail the other shortly, but for the moment I'll focus on Troy Gentry. Troy Gentry, half of the late 90s/2000s superstar duo Montgomery Gentry, died today in a helicopter crash. The accident took place in Medford, New Jersey, a township near Philadelphia. The duo were scheduled to perform a concert at the Flying W Airport and Resort tonight (September 8). Gentry was a passenger in the helicopter that crashed about 1:00 PM. The pilot was also killed. According to the NJ.com website, Gentry was rescued from the wreckage and taken to a nearby hospital, where he died. Troy Gentry and Earl Montgomery, both central Kentucky natives, formed Montgomery Gentry in the late 90s. They racked up several #1 hits including "If You Ever Stop Loving Me," "Lucky Man," and "Something to Be Proud Of." They won the CMA "Vocal Duo of the Year" award in 2000 as well as the ACM "New Vocal Duo or Group" trophy. Their sound was more southern rock than country, but they had a large following. Troy Gentry was 50. Here's one of their biggest hits:

Although not a follower of Country music I do recognize the names of this duo. Tragic that well known performers such as; Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, Ricky Nelson, and also Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines of Lynyrd Skynyrd were killed in air crashes.

Love Montgomery Gentry, and was very sad to hear of the passing on the radio a few hours ago.
