sometimes I wish I were still a kid

Today I just keep thinking about how I just want to be a kid again. I want to lounge around in my nightgown eating cereal watching my 90s counsel tv, watching One Saturday morning's cartoon lineup. I then want to sit on our old ottoman which I used to turn into a car when I was playing (It was one of those wooden ones that was like part coffee table with two removable cushions on either end). I want to play with my barbies and baby dolls and have no adult responsibilities. I honestly didn't realize how good I had it at the time. I'd even happily become my dad's remote control again if it meant getting to be a kid again for a little bit. It's funny, I was in such a hurry to grow up and now I'd love to go back. I didn't have the best of everything growing up, we were actually pretty poor and my mom and dad's involvement in my childhood was sporadic, we did spend Fridays together but mostly we were left to our own devices. I had decent parents but they were older when we were born so it wasn't easy for them but I always felt loved. I didn't get to do any of the fun things we let my son get involved in because we didn't have the money and my dad refused to do anything like that with us. He would only agree if it was something he wanted to do too. None of that really mattered though because I got to enjoy being a kid. I think we spend so much time wanting to grow up because we think it's fun and games because you can do whatever you want but you don't realize the trade off and you don't realize that adults have restrictions too. Sure, we can go to bed when we want and shower when we want and go where we want but then again we pay for those things sometimes with actual money and sometimes with time and lack of sleep. Adults make their own choices sure, but we also have to do other things like pay bills and work among other things. We can't just spend our money on anything we want at least not without serious consequences. As a kid, you don't see that part though. I would never have rushed my childhood if I knew then what I know now.

We all do at some point in our lives. Either to reminisce, change something in the past , or escape from responsibilities. At the end of the day, the only thing we can do is treasure the memories we had and face the reality.

Very true, my memories are sometimes what helps me move forward. Stopping and thinking about the takes away some of the stress sometimes even if only for a moment. We all have to grow up but that doesn't mean we can't stop and remember what life was like when things were easier.

True, but while you can enjoy being an adult sometimes it's easy to wish you could have a short reprieve and be a kid without responsibilities again. Yeah, we can enjoy ourselves as adults and make the most of it but I think most people have moments they wish they could just take a break from it all, unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. I know I will never be a kid again and I know I have to face stressful situations but sometimes I like remembering my childhood because it reminds me of a simpler time and for even just a short moment it takes my mind off of my sometimes stressful reality.

There are parts of my childhood I wouldn't mind going back to, but other parts I never want to relive. If I could go back to being a kid when I was out in my backyard playing and away from my parents, lost in my fantasy world, then I would stay there forever. But my real life as a kid sucked. Sure, the TV was better (although I'm old enough to remember when Saturday morning cartoons were not called "One Saturday" -- I remember when it became that and I had already outgrown Saturday morning cartoons) and a lot of the entertainment and fashion, etc., was better...but I don't know if it would be a good trade off. For me, anyway. My childhood wasn't free from worry or responsibilities. I had my brothers to take care of and try to protect. I had to protect my mom when my dad turned violent. We walked on eggshells. So...in some ways my life is less stressful now, even though my anxiety is worse. Anyway...if I could go back to the good moments in my childhood, I would. I often long for those times. But not the bad parts. The bad parts are why I'm messed up now. Though one thing I miss from being a kid is that I had hope back then. Hope that my life would get better and I'd get out of this town and do something with my life. Over the years I have gradually lost that hope. I still cling to a little bit, but not much is left.

Yeah, not all kids had happy childhoods unfortunately and it's sad you didn't get to enjoy your entire childhood the way you should have been able to. Sometimes for some people, life is easier as an adult. I was very fortunate in comparison to a lot of kids, we didn't have a lot of money but I definitely had it better than some. No matter how bad or good you have it someone out there has it better or worse than you and sometimes I really keep that in mind. I know a lot of people probably had it better than me but I definitely had it better than a lot of kids. I am glad I had a happy childhood to look back on. As kids we have dreams and we have hope and sometimes reality comes crashing down on top of us, but that doesn't mean we can't still hope and I know it's extremely difficult for you but I'm sure eventually you can find it again. There's always hope, but personally, I just don't set mine too high.

I Think this is something most people think of. I thought of this too because of money most of the time haha. I even think that I'm already working but how come it seems like it's always not enough. Being a kid I don't have to worry about money because I just think of playing with my friends or my siblings :)

I think you're right, there are moments we all just want to go back in time and take a break from adulthood. Mine is usually money related too lol.

I also feel this way sometimes, I wish I could go back to the time when everything was so simple and being happy was easy. Have you heard the song of Taylor Swift "Never Grow Up"? , it is anice song that maybe most of us can relate to.

I like that song. I actually tried to use it in a slideshow for my son once but it wouldn't work right with my video maker. It brought tears to my eyes.

@sissy15 The lyrics are so touching for both mother and child. That's one of the best that I have heard from Taylor, and like you, that song made me cry especially on those days when my family had some issues.

@anorona They are, I always remember my son when I hear it. How he's growing up way too fast. It definitely strikes a chord in me but more on the mother level than a child level.

We all wish if we could go back to our childhood days. Those were really the best days of our life ,which will never come back in our life. NO,stress no tensions, don't have to bother about anything.Just be happy .Of course parents put restrictions on us,but they are doing it for our own good only. But we don't understand it.But otherwise being a kid is an awesome experience which we will miss as we grow older.

I think you're right, at least most of us would like to go back, and when we're kids we really don't understand why our parents have restrictions for us but as we get older we learn to appreciate what all they did for us, especially when we have kids of our own.

Sometimes I think it's a brain defense mechanism lol to bring us back to a time where there were fewer responsibilities, life was carefree, our health was at it's peak, no bills to pay etc..think its normal, also happens to me from time to time, its like our own bodies giving itself a break, I think what's not normal is when you can't or refuse anymoe to come back to the present and face reality

I think you're right. It's great to take a break from reality and remember from time to time but you have to be able to come back to reality and live your life. We can't live in the past but it's nice to stop in from time to time.

I sure wanted to buy a time machine at Amazon, wished to turn back the clock when I was still 5 years old, that was the best time of my life

I think childhood, as a rule, is usually the best time of most peoples lives. I wish I could turn back time too sometimes and not have any adult responsibilities.
