And Which of the Other Shoes is Going to Drop?

United States
September 17, 2017 6:58am CST
I have been worried that something will go wrong and of course it has to be with my car. Friday when I picked up my granddaughter from daycare, she said "grampy's truck!" My husband's truck is loud. Yeah, my muffler is getting loud. Yay me. Hubby looked online for the muffler and found the prices to be very high. So his time will be spent this week looking for the best price to replace the muffler. He will do the work himself so we will be saving the cost of labor. Thankfully the other shoe that would cost us much more (furnace replacement) hasn't dropped. Hubby was able to fix that at little cost.

I know what you mean about repairs on anything these days. They charge a fortune. That's why i haven't had anything done in my apartment yet. The cost. I wish I was handy with things like that, but I'm not. I hope you find that muffler at a good price.

We still have 3 windows to replace, walls to finish, the bathroom floor needs to be replaced, plus 2 doors. That will all have to wait until he gets back to work.

@ElusiveButterfly That is a lot. I need the entire apartment done here. Age is setting in. Believe me. I just have to wait to save the money for the repairs. And being an old house, there are limits as to what can be done.

@inertia4 we had hoped to have it all done before fall. However, it looks like our plans will have to be put off until spring. He will be able to put a bandaid on the problem with the floor, but it will look like heck.

Yes, for that I am grateful. Also have a brother who is a carpenter, but at the moment he is busy building a 3 car garage with an apartment over the top. Busy man.

Coincidental, I asked my hubby why his SUV sounds so awful, and he thinks that his muffler is going on it too. But we've got so many kilometers on it that we hate to replace the muffler since we feel its on its last legs. But I'm sure that in a few weeks he'll have to take it in for a replacement.

Perhaps it can give the old gal a second wind and give you many more rides for a while.

@Juliaacv oh that is a long time to go without repairing something that needed to be done asap. I don't blame you for not wanting to drive it. I wouldn't either.

@ElusiveButterfly A year ago we should have replaced it, but here we are a year later and still driving it. Well, he is, I won't drive it anymore, things are starting to go on it and I don't like that.

@LadyDuck there was a time when you would get pulled over for having a loud muffler. It is a safety hazard and you received a warning ticket and had to get it fixed within a few days.

@ElusiveButterfly The muffler is a serious matter here, you cannot circulate with a noisy muffler, if the police gets you, you are fined and you must bring the car immediately to a closest garage to repair.

I am so sorry that your car is giving trouble. I hope that an affordable muffler can be found and your car will be running smoothly. Good the furnace was fixed at little cost.

@bluesa with colder weather knocking at our door we may not be able to get to it until the spring. We need to think about getting fuel for the tank to keep us warm.

@ElusiveButterfly I can imagine, it is very frustrating when you know what needs to be done and you can't get started. I hope you will be able to soon though.

The furnace had been replaced about 4 years ago, so it should be good with only having to do minor repairs.

You need to be careful when buying parts at a junk yard. Don't know how long they will last. I'd rather buy new when it comes to the exhaust system. Better to be safe than sorry.

It's good your husband knows how to replace things like that. My boyfriend is clueless when it comes to any kind of repair -- unless it has to do with computers, then he knows a little.

Well I hope he can get a good muffler at a fraction of the cost for you. With my husband now gone I will have to keep hoping everything around here stays in one piece.

I wouldn't be able to do the repairs that the house or vehicles need on my own. Glad that he is capable of doing a lot of them.

Car parts are getting crazy high. We have taken to checking on Rock Auto, many many times even with shipping they are the cheapest around. And they ship really fast. You might want to take a look at them online. My son needed a radiator the parts store around here wanted like 120 bucks, we got a brand new one on Rock Auto for 60 bucks and like 10 bucks shipping.

There are some things that he can't fix and that will be a problem when and if they break down.
