School Field Trips From My Childhood: Second Grade

United States
September 18, 2017 12:30am CST
In second grade we spent a lot of time learning to square dance. This was so we could participate in the big Square Dance at the high school. All the schools in the district were sending their second graders to the high school to showcase our square dancing skills. They stuck us all in the gym and we do-si-doed and promenaded. I also have a memory of my class going to the movie theater to see An American Tale: Fievel Goes West, but I don't know if we actually did or not. The year adds up, but it could be a false memory because I really don't remember much else about it. (Thanks again to @Courtlynn for the inspiration for this post series.)

We never learnt square dance and we never learnt to dance in school. We had music lessons, but not dance lessons.

We would occasionally throughout my school career. We also learned how to country line dance and how to do the Macarena!

They made us practice so much I probably still remember how to do it! They had this weird fat guy come in and sing for us and teach us how to do it. When he wasn't able to come to our practices, they just put on his records. I always wondered who that guy was.

@Courtlynn It would be, but that was so long ago I may have forgotten. In my mind I can still see how to do it, but who knows if my feet will listen.

I think we wore nice clothes, but we didn't wear "square dance" clothes.
