School Field Trips From My Childhood: Third Grade

United States

In third grade we returned to the high school for art day. We made tye-dyed artwork, newspaper hats, clay "sculptures" (mine never got glazed) and engaged in other fun arts and crafts activities. My friend Alyson got green paint on her thumb and smeared it on somebody's car in the parking lot...which I may have encouraged her to do. Right before Christmas break we got to go to Sacramento to see a ballet perform The Nutcracker. It was an exciting day and I still have my little nutcracker ornament that I bought as a souvenir. I remember flipping up and down in my seat in the Memorial Auditorium (where I later saw Duran Duran in concert as an adult.) That was the last year I was able to still flip up and down in my seat. It was very cold in the auditorium and I lent my jacket to my friend Harkirat (that's pronounced "Harkeet") and then she wouldn't give it back when I asked for it. I don't even know why I was sitting next to her as we weren't in the same class. Maybe my memory is faulty and it was Alyson I was sitting next to and who wouldn't return my coat. At any rate, that was the only time I've ever been to a ballet. (This is a series of posts of my childhood memories of field trips I went on in grammar school. This series was inspired by @Courtlynn.)

I did get the coat back, she just didn't want to give it up because she was cold. I have always wanted to go back and see a ballet as an adult, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Maybe this Christmas my boyfriend and I can finally do that, since he's got a car now that will make the drive to Sacramento and not break down on the highway.

That is too bad. It was always fun going somewhere with the class and not having to stay at school doing work all day.

That was bad that you never got your jacket back.

She eventually gave it back, she just wouldn't give it back while we were in the theater because it was cold and she hadn't brought hers.
