HIT TWICE: DEADLY HURRICANES

They must have breathed a huge sigh of relief when their Government made arrangements to have them evacuated from Irma ravaged St Martin and the Virgin islands back to their homeland Dominica. I am talking about Dominicans who were residing on those islands. Little did they know that within the space of two weeks, they would be facing another deadly category 5 storm - in Dominica. Communication is down and reports are sketchy, but we do know that Hurricane Maria last night made landfall on the island of Dominica and left devastation in its wake. Even the Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit had to be rescued after the roof of his official residence caved in. The majority of homes have lost roofs and the death toll is at 6 so far. Hurricane Maria is the strongest ever to hit the island of Dominica - next in its path will be the Virgin islands and Puerto Rico.

This has certainly been a year of devastation. We follow this on CNN and national weather channels. St. Martin, Dominica, and Puerto Rico are some of our favorite islands.

I hope we have seen the last of disasters - for this year at least.

O God, have mercy! I can see the devastation though I am far on the other side of the globe.

I am in the Caribbean - too close for comfort. And even though, my island hasn't been touched thus far - the season is far from over.

@Marilynda1225 To be honest, I am beginning to get rather nervous. The last bad hurricane I experienced was Hurricane Sandy in 2012 - and that was a cat 2 when it made land fall. Now we are seeing some monster storms.

It seems that today is a day of nature disasters. I was at a birthday party when someone read in his cellphone about the big earthquake in Ciudad de Mexico. I´m watching CNN now and there they show what hurricane Maria is doing and how the earthquake in Mexico has destroyed buildings and killed people.

I was in Dominica a few years back and it is a nature paradise. I hate to think about the loss of that beautiful landscape and the horrors those poor people have to endure. Prayers and thoughts go out to all those in Maria's path.

I have never visited that island but I have seen pictures - and it is or was very beautiful. These storms are turning into monsters because of the very warm waters which is their fuel.

Oh poor people. Though I know there are those who choose to stay instead of evacuating.

Even shelters get damaged - and not everyone can leave the islands whenever a storm approaches.
