United States

I have heard some people call the evening meal Dinner while others calls the evening meal Supper. It depends on who I am with on what I call the evening meal. What do you call the evening meal and why? There is no wrong answer.

I've always known our evening meal to be called dinner.

Here in the southern US, most of us call the three meals, breakfast, lunch or dinner, and supper. It can get confusing.

It's interchangeable in the Phillipines but supper is exclusive for night time meal while dinner could be any time except breakfast.

"Cena", Italian. Otherwise, I usually say "dinner" in English. It's the first term I learned in school, so I'm more accustomed to it. I know what "supper" means, but it is not a word I usually use. Supper sounds like soup, I usually don't eat soup in the evening.

For me the evening meal is dinner, though I do have friends that call it supper, I suppose it depends on the individual.

@scrapper In Ireland many of us refer to it quite often as tea.

Funny about that. I generally say I'm going to dinner when I eat out at a restaurant but say supper when I am home. My Mom was from farmers so dinner meant what I call lunch.
