Night Time and Barking Dogs

Dogs in the night have always found their way into books. I met them in , "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time", in Haddon's book .Have also wondered about the dog that did not bark in the Sherlock Holmes story,"Silver Blaze". But last night it was the barking of real dogs that got me awake. There was this repetitive and incessant barking from quite a lot of doggy voices in the middle of the night. So much so that, I woke up and went out to the balcony to see what was the matter. Apparently nothing, just this whole pack rushing up and down the empty road barking loudly. And a whole herd of cows sitting peacefully by the side of the road chewing their cud. Anyway its morning now, the dogs have disappeared, the cars taken over. The noise continues... Have you ever woken up in the night by some outside noise?

Were they just the street dogs or wild dogs do you know ARM? Yes I sometimes wake up here with other people in the apartments here making some noise but not too often thankfully.

@responsiveme YES!! Here even in my place, rather urban, you can still hear those wild animals, the coyotes yipping and barking sometimes late in the evening...you had the foxes too

I have had disturbed sleep many nights because of a barking dog - ours to be precise. Thankfully he doesn't do it too much anymore.

Maybe your dog thinks he has to guard the house ,hence the barks.

@Kandae11 Maybe he sees unfriendly aliens out there and is telling them to keep away?

@responsiveme Yes even at night. They won't be good watch dogs because the owner let's them bark all the time. If someone goes by on a bicycle, they bark. They bark at people walking by. That's not good.

From time to time yes. During the summer months and sometimes on weekends it is the kids out there playing Basketball. But there have been times we have had Barking dogs awake us, or keep us awoke longer too and not sure what the issue might be.

Yes, dogs bark but then I wanted to know what was the reason in my case. How late do the kids play basket ball but that sounds like a happy kind of noise

I remember the Sherlock Holmes story "The Adventure of Silver Blaze". Dogs usually bark at night when they feel people moving. If they were loud, I understand they woke you up. Where we live it's a very quiet area, the minimum noise wakes me up.

All the dogs around here are indoor dogs. The only time I hear them is if a visitor comes to their door or if an earthquake comes through-- they are good early earthquake warning systems! What wakes me up is people coming home drunk late at night and talking loudly in the street. Very irritating!

The fence being blown down woke me up one night. My neighbours flushing the toilet all night long has done it as well. I wear ear plugs now to keep the noise out.

LOL! Those dogs weren't just running around barking for no reason, ARM! They were having their own version of a myLot party! (They were excited because they were finally getting to meet other dogs they had always spoken to and enjoyed on their version of myLot! ) Now, it should be our turn to try to get all of our myLot friends together so we can finally meet each other in real life. (Yes, I know this is only a pipe-dream, but it always makes my heart sing when I think that it might happen someday.)

I was awake because of humans making noise in the middle of the night, so unusual for our quiet neighbourhood, I was happy when the noise stopped. And happier when my husband came home from the west coast so I could sleep soundly.

@responsiveme They were having a party, and they don't often do that but it did keep me awake for a while. Where I live is called the bench - a flat area half way up a steep escarpment. For some reason although I don't know the details, voices can be heard from big distances, conversations in the back yard are heard by all near by, parties are extremely loud just because of the echo caused by the details of the mountain. It took a while to get used to that but with time we just block it out of our heads...
The Niagara Escarpment, in its Ontario portion, is 725 km long, covering 1923 km2, with a maximum height of 335 m.

@PainsOnSlate the sound must be carrying because of the wide spaces and the echo. After a time , I guess we do get used to it. Olive on the top floor and the sounds from the street come on loud and clear but it's muted downstairs where my landlord lives
