Just What I Need -- A Leaking Pipe Under the Sink!

United States
September 21, 2017 11:55pm CST
I was doing the dishes a while ago when all of a sudden I realized I was standing in a puddle of water. I knew I wasn't sloshing around THAT much water, and it didn't take long to locate the source of the leak: A steady stream of water was coming out of the cupboard beneath the sink. It seems that the garbage disposal is leaking. So, I guess this means I will have to call the rental company first thing in the morning and have them send someone out to fix it, as neither I or my boyfriend know anything about fixing leaky garbage disposals or pipes in general. I was not planning on waking up first thing in the morning to have to deal with the maintenance man, but I guess I will have to. Don't want the problem to get any worse and cause any water damage. For now I have a towel positioned so any leaky water should be absorbed. I guess this means I can't use that side of the sink until it's fixed. I sure hope they can send someone out tomorrow, otherwise I'll have to wait till Monday. I hate dealing with the maintenance man, he's always so freaking rude.

Sorry to hear about your plumbing problem. They can be a pain. If you have a bucket or a big pan you could set it under the garbage disposal and it might catch a lot of the water. Those maintenance people can be a pain. It is sad that you have a rude one.

@Srbageldog I hope you didn't have anymore issues last night with the garbage disposal. Hopefully they will get it fixed for you today. I don't understand how people are able to keep their jobs if they are rude to people and make bad remarks. I think I would be mentioning that to the owners.

@velvet53 I don't understand how people like that keep their jobs either. The maintenance man used to be very nice and flirty towards me when we first moved in. Then he realized I was living here with my boyfriend and started being really rude. Sometimes he will be in a joking sort of mood but usually he's a rude jerk. I have heard other people complain about him too.

If it continues to leak (I'll check it again in a bit -- hopefully it won't keep leaking if I'm not running water down it) I'll do just that. It didn't appear that there was a whole lot of water under the sink itself -- it had all run out onto the floor. And yes, maintenance people can be a pain. We've got two of them who are rude and make offhanded remarks when they come over.

This brought back memories of leaky pipes we had to deal with in our last place. The landlord was slow in finding someone competent enough to fix the problem. I placed big pots under the leak to catch the drips. The pots fill faster than you would think they would. But it worked. My husband ended up fixing the leak. He submitted a bill to the landlord and he was paid for the parts and time.

@Srbageldog I would leave it to them to get the work done. If it gets messed up you aren't to blame.

@ElusiveButterfly Exactly. I'm afraid we'd just create more damage.

I'm sorry you went through all that. The lady at the rental company asked me to put a bowl underneath it so it doesn't get water all over. I told her it doesn't seem to leak if I'm not running water down that side of the sink, so I haven't been. She said "good" and left it at that. The plumber was supposed to call today and arrange a time to come out and he didn't. So now who knows how long it will take until he gets around to it. Neither of us know the faintest thing about repairing garbage disposals, so I don't want to try to mess with it. I'm glad your husband was able to fix the leak at your old place.

Thanks, me too. I don't like not being able to use one side of the sink. Especially not being able to use the garbage disposal!

I also do not like to deal with this kind of problems in the morning, but the sooner you call the maintenance man the better is.

He didn't even call like he was supposed to to arrange a time to come out and fix it. Sigh.

@LadyDuck They really are. And then they expect you to have open availability for whenever they decide to show up.

Oh man. I hope they can get to it tomorrow, as waiting all weekend would suck.

Yes, and I hate dealing with this stuff. I guess it was bound to happen after living here 9 years.

@Courtlynn We have had a couple plumbing issues before, but not in our own apartment -- we were told our sink was leaking down into the neighbor's apartment, and a couple times they claimed our tub was leaking into their apartment (it wasn't, at least if it was they never did any work up here on it.) The plumber didn't show up today or even call like I was told he would. So now I can't use that side of the sink until whenever he gets around to actually coming over here.

I will, I just dislike dealing with him. He acts all tough and is always criticizing everything -- last time he came over to fix the fan in the bathroom, he called the person who installed the fan an idiot...he was the one who installed the fan, so I guess he's the idiot.

@Srbageldog LOL, that is so funny, I would have said, I thought you put this one in

@andriaperry I should have said that, didn't think to say anything till after the fact. I just let him rant and chuckled to myself because he was the idiot.
