The disappointed pirate sports an attitude of gratitude

Hi MyLot. I need a hug. And a big drink. Or three. It's been a weird day. Today the plan was - that I was going to go to Minnesota's Renaissance Festival. I love this event. I was going to go with my friend (the bride to be who I've written about a few times). It was going to be an awesome day. My costume was pirate inspired. Well. I got halfway down there and my brake light came on and kept dinging at me. I am a nervous driver in our largest-populated area in this state anyway. I didn't want to risk having no brakes. So I made the disappointing choice to turn around and come home. I made it home, fine. As I examined it - I noticed that my brake fluid was a bit low. So I walked to the local gas station to buy brake fluid. Being the weird day that is - they told me we are under a tornado warning. Well. That accounted for the weird stillness in the air. In the meantime, I got in a bit of a fight with some of my dance friends. It's all settled, now. But still stressful. Well, I came in from putting in my brake fluid. Saw a text from my mom. I need to back up a bit before I write this next part. I only got to meet my mom's favorite cousin, once. He was an "outcast" from her family, as we are, too. He lived in Florida. Dennis and his wife stayed with us for a week some number of years back while they were on vacation here in MN. Dennis was a nice person, honestly. He had a great big smile and a friendly, outgoing nature. He could make even the most shy person feel comfortable around him and had an excellent sense of humor. Dennis loved things like Daytona and working in construction. He built part of Disney amusement park in Florida. Dennis had been on our minds recently due to the hurricane. My parents had called and left a message - to make sure Dennis and wife were alright in the severe weather. Today, Dennis's wife called and returned that message. Dennis passed away today as the result of cancer. Though I didn't know him well - it causes me great pain that this excellent person is no longer with us. My poor parents who enjoyed him so well in spite of the distance. Poor everyone who knew him well. So. Before I got the news about Dennis, I was planning this post. I was going to say how even though my car failed me somewhat today, at least I got home safe, and at least it didn't happen in a really populated area with heavy traffic. At least I own a car. While I am disappointed to not be seeing friends, at least I have friends who love me. And as for the argument today with some people - well at least we solved it. Another bright side - going to the Minnesota Festival would have cost me more money than I would have liked. So, there is that, too. And who knows, maybe something bad would have happened while I was there. I have a roof over my head, I have my health. I have food to eat and clean water to drink and bathe in. I have family and friends who love and care about me, and every once in awhile - I have some extra funds to go have fun with. That is what I was going to say , until I got the news about Dennis. So now, I will add on this note saying that - life is precious and every day is a gift. We will see - hopefully I will not get blown away by the tornado. Photo: Me - similar costume as I was going to wear today

I am impressed at the fact that you know how to check the brake fluid. Wish I know how. Perhaps I will go check youtube. Sad about your cousin. He sounded like a great guy. May he rest in eternal peace.

Thanks! I like knowing things about car repair. I like to keep learning, wish I knew more. Actually wish I would have taken auto mechanic . You tube is a good resource. Also your car's owner's manual. At least on this car - the brake fluid reservoir was easy to find and check. :-) Thanks! Even though I met him only once - he made a big impression on a shy, awkward teen that I was. Easy to talk to, I felt very comfortable talking with him and enjoyed his sense of humor.

@FayeHazel I have some cousins who are soooo good looking. As a child, I was mooning over them a bit. Growing up, I heard that they married, and now just chubby big etc, I was a bit disappointed.

So true. How weird things pile up on days like this. I tried talking to "woebot" about it. I think it was a bit above its head. Ha.

Thank you so much, dear. I have been asking God to take good care of him up there. Thanks! I'm happy that even though the light came on and the chime was dinging at me - at least the brakes remained working

@TiarasOceanView Aw shucks! Thanks - that photo was taken at "pirate fest" this year - back in August. Beautiful park - that river wound it's way around the area. Ah, I'm going to drive it for awhile, and hope the brakes are good now... though if there are more issues, or it keeps leaking, I will have to have it checked. Thanks for asking though

I send you a major super giant hug! I am so sorry about Dennis, cancer is a cruel disease. May Dennis Rest In Peace. And yes, life is very precious, though we get some very odd days through it all.

Thanks! I made parts of the costume - some of it is crafted out of a t-shirt. Tornado went right on by - not much of a storm either. I should be thankful, but I was looking forward to a big rain storm (not the winds tho) -- Thanks for the kind thought

We are estranged from (most) of my mom's family because - in short- they didn't like my dad. My mom had been married before , and divorced, so when they met my dad they quizzed him about how he would treat my mom and well my dad, (being my dad) didn't take the way they worded it well. That kicked it off. I also have two half sisters from my mom. It was before my time, but I guess they didn't like my dad either. Did a lot of things, ran away from home a lot... ended up being raised by their biological dad. I don't know them. Most of this happened before my time, or as I was an infant. As for Dennis? I'm really unsure why he was excluded. Asked my mom about it. Apparently Dennis's mom was in a situation when Dennis was born - and their mutual grandparents ended up raising Dennis. Caused some harsh feelings that the grandparents were raising him... doesn't make sense to me. Wasn't his fault the situation he was born into. But I guess that was the late 30s or early 40s.... times were different then....

I am so sorry for your loss, that is so very sad. I think when things stop us we were not meant to go. Like the boat last week for me, it was not meant to be fixed,

Thanks for the kindness. And I think you're right. Even though it may be frustrating at the time there is probably a reason - who knows what may have happened at the festival
