I could write a very long list of my favorite movies. Ones I enjoyed for whatever reason. Due to a cataract I have quit reading books pretty much but, I do have three favorite books. Those are: To Kill A Mockingbird White Oreander Tom Sawyer I have reasons for each of these being on my top favorites list. The first one I first read after a visit to my dying great aunt's home in Portland. She was in bed and my grandmother and mother were busy packing up the house for her. At one point she called me into her room. Asked me to comb her hair. Very carefully I combed her grey hair. She and I talked a bit and then she pointed over to a table with a stack of book on it. She told me to choose one to borrow. I took a instant double take. She was dying. Why was I only to borrow one book? I looked over at her and she had a twinkle in her eye. Humor right up to the last. I was impressed. The second one was written by Janet Fitch. She has a way of writing that I find very good. Her descriptive but short phrases move the story along nicely. The third one is one my mom read to me when I was a preschooler. She used to read Sherlock Holmes to me and then she read this one which I loved. I was a tom boy and could really relate to the thrill of the adventure he went on. Do you have three favorite books?

I only have one to mention..Little Women..I do not recall whatever books I had read. That is sweet your great Aunt had said borrow the book. I am sorry to hear of your cataracts..wish you could get those taken care of. I can no longer read books due to racing thoughts and lack of concentration. I miss reading.

Like I just told @celticeagle, try audio books. If nothing else the person reading the book will calm your brain and help you sleep. I'm saying that from experience.

@TiarasOceanView That's too bad. I often fall asleep at night, hearing my hubby's audio books burbling along.

I read a lot of animal books when I was a kid. Not sure about a favorite. You ever tried audio books? You can get them free like my hubby does.

I used to read a lot of books about horses. I have a few audio books. I have a problem with getting the ear buds tangled and it wakes me up.

@celticeagle For sure. Walter Farley's series The Black Stallion. And my Friend Flicka. I'm sorry about the ear bud issue.

I love Emma, Pride and Prejudice and yes Little Women and probably the entire Laura Ingall WIlder set. I had every Nancy Drew at one point before the fire and had read them all multiple times.

It just struck me as special because of the author's skill in writing.

I have never read White Oreander, but I have the other two. Studio C does a great parody to TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. I never could get into TOM SAWYER, although I teach it just about every year to my students. I guess I am a kid at heart because I like the Wishbone version of Tom Sawyer. I can't pick just three books. I love to read, so I will pick my three favorite authors: Frank Peretti, Jane Austen, and Ted Dekker.

@celticeagle One of my best memories with my mom is staying up late and her telling me ghost stories. Maybe that is why I like scary stuff and Halloween so much.

I prefer reading a lot more than watching movies. I always believe that books tend to tell us more than the movies. I have read Tom Sawyer and it is a great book. My mother had cataracts and she had them removed at the beginning of the year and she is now doing fine. Maybe you should try taking care of yours too and you will be back to reading

I agree. Books do a lot more characterization, backstory and such. I have one cataract and when it is to a point where the doctor says I need to have the surgery then I will do that.

How about top three authors instead since I've read all or most of their books - Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins - Left Behind Series, Francine Rivers - I've read many of her books. Frank Peretti - I've read all of his unless he's got another one I don't know about. These are all Christian authors, but they are my top favorite authors. My top three authors in other secular books - JK Rowling, Deborah Harkness, JRR Tolkien - Lord of the Rings
