Human Head Transplantation- Is it possible?

It's not too far away. If reports to be believed, it is going to happen sooner than we realize. An Italian neurosurgeon, Sergio Canavero, will be conducting the procedure in December 2017. The surgery is supposed to last 36 hours with over 150 doctors and nurses in attendance. It is being widely criticized. You can read the details in the article below. Due to curiosity, I found that the head transplant surgeries in particular aren't that new. There have been experiments conducted on animals since the 1900s. Does it give you the heebie jeebies as it does to me a little?

I've looked at this for a while now. Your link is somewhat spurious as the author has no expertise in any medical area. Lets be real...the article says december 2017. December 2027 maybe but not 2017 If medical science had this ability now they'd be curing patients that are paralysed by re attaching their brain to their current body. It is not happening any time soon...a head transplant would require the necessary technology that'd cure quadriplegics and it doesn't currently exist. PS...I know about this as I have a quad friend and he and I look at more or less every current legit medical site.

@vandana7 It isn't currently possible. No reputable neuro surgeon thinks it will be in the near future. There are multiple issues...I am looking at medical not ethical issues.

@Mike197602 Even if it were possible, wouldn't there be laws to prevent that? Or at least try to stop it? If it were done on animals, there will be uproar of "animal cruelty, wouldn't it?

These days I simply 'pass' the opportunity to read or go through the stuff. This head transplant... ah, thanks but no! Unless you are using elephant's head.

Few? hmmm..I better be gone before that...but I am scared they will dig my grave to pull out my body...sigh.. On a serious note...they are trying to create kidneys and hearts using stem cells, succeeding to fair degree. Then they can do that to head and brain as well. Why do they need to go through this procedure?

Nothing is impossible, heart and kidney transplant use to be impossible, so are computers, smartphones, airplanes, laser beams and a whole lot more.

If this is going to be possible, then it must mean you can transplant the rest of the body below the neck. It would suit me better as I think my head is fine but the body is in need of a bit of improvement. In fact, why not try out a female body? That could be interesting.

@Daljinder The whole idea of head transplants sounds like a Frankenstein movie. I was just trying to make it more interesting. It might be of benefit to those who believe they were born the wrong gender.

@redurnet Yeah I also read about the animal head transplant. They didn't survive for long. The longest surviving one lasted about 6 months. I can't imagine how they could possibly do it with human.

Nothing is impossible, we have many such stories and legands of different transplant. Lorg Ganesh for example, Hayagriv incarnation of Vishnu, Head transplants done by Ashwini Kumaras etc . These may be called myth by many people, but this says it is possible. Dr. Vladimir Demikhov's legend is example, he studied all these and instead of jumping into conclusion that this is myth, he reserched if this is possible, and really he was succed. This is fact.

@yugocean Myth or not, the people and the age you are talking about was of extraordinary people. An age where humans, demons and Gods all lived tiogether in harmony.....mostly. They had divine powers and what not. But this doctor is an ordinary human and has no knowledge or wisdom that those people in that age did. With science we may reach the point where we will be able to carry out this procedure successfully but all I am saying is that now is not that time. The best of the best doctors, scientists and technology aren't ready for this right this point of time. In the future, yes but not now.

@Daljinder I found that specific article using The Wayback Machine, but when I tried to place that link here it only gave the 404 error. Here is the link to an article that remains available about this. This is a strangely compelling/repellent article/thought to me. (I simply don't understand how someone would feel okay about using someone else's body as a type of crutch, but maybe I don't have the right mindset for this type of thinking.... *sigh!* I am not sure I WANT that type of mindset, either!) DJ, I always thought I was very open-minded about everything around me. Excited to learn about the leaps and bounds humans have taken in every conceivable direction... but I was mistaken. I am NOT as open-minded as I thought. (I am a weak human, after all. I don't like this thought, either. ) What is going to happen makes me sick to my stomach. USING someone else's body to.... live? without the driving thoughts of the original owner is severely disturbing.... Hmmm... Have I made you look at me... in a new way, Dearheart? (Believe me, I don't know how to look at myself right now... I couldn't donate my body to something like this and would not allow my head to be transplanted, either.) I'm sorry...
Earlier this year Italian neuroscientist Sergio Canavero shocked the world when he announced he would perform the world’s first human head transplan

@Daljinder The link is no longer available which sucks but still, so odd to even think of something like this going on. I thought about this stuff when I was very little but to think we are at that time or getting closer to that time is odd. Hard to comprehend somewhat.
