What Part of She is Contagious Do They Not Understand?

United States

Just received a call from my supervisor. She is unhappy with the fact that I have to be out again tomorrow with a sick little girl. She is contagious at this point and the daycare will not allow her back until she is past this stage. I also understand that the scheduler is having problems finding coverage. However, I don't have any other choice at this point. She is threatening to not schedule me with work if I can't be there. They are upset naturally over fact that not only do I need to be out with a sick child, but my daycare provider decided to close on Monday (short notice) and I am having problems finding someone to watch my granddaughter. They are not sympathetic to my dilemma and truthfully I am sick of it all. Let the cards fall where they may at this point.

Sorry to hear this. If a child is not only sick but also contagious then that should be all that needs to be said.

I'm really sorry that you have to deal with all of that, as if having a sick little one isn't enough. =(

It is ridiculous. I couldn't get a word in edgewise with this woman.

Businesses sure don't care about a person's personal life responsibilities. Just their bottom line.

It will be their loss if they choose not to keep me in their employ. I am not going to lose sleep over my choice to be home with my sick grandchild.

Sounds like you need to look for a new job. I hate when employers don't care about their employees.

This is a healthcare organization too. Flippin idiots. Threatening to not put me on the schedule like I was a new employee that didn't know the rules. When I meet her next week I am just going to tell her to do what she has to do. If I had options and places to bring this child while I work I would have. My clients are probably worried about me. I worry about them too. Have dedicated 10 years of my life to this job and I get a slap in the face for having to stay home with a sick child. Yay.

@Srbageldog I was talking with a friend who is the daughter of one of my former clients who recently passed. We discussed the situation at work. She also know my situation with Little Miss. I told her that I was no longer certain I could stay with this company because of this. If family and health were not important to a healthcare organization, I didn't want to work for them.

@ElusiveButterfly I don't blame you. You would think certain types of organizations would place family and health first. Alas, it's all about money with them.

Oh wow. Poor little miss! Hope shes better soon. Yes, you cant help if a child is sick and you have to be home with them. Lots of jerks out there who dont seem to get it, even those bosses who have kids themselves. Its sad. Wish you the best

You would think I planned on this happening. I forewarned them what could happen and I guess it wasn't taken seriously.

Yes it's very contagious, when my sons had it my husband got it and couldn't work for 2 weeks. It's not easy to deal with.

I am sure that my clients don't want to catch it either. It spreads easily. Although I do use good hand hygiene, there is always a chance it could spread.

They are apathetic. They are not sympathetic. They don't understand that since Little Miss is contagious, so are you... (I know you take all precautions not to be, but there is that potential.)

oops thanks for correcting me on that. I am surprised that they don't look at the entire picture. I work with clients that could be compromised if they were to be exposed to this.

She had a short nap today. Ate some yogurt and drinking electrolyte water mixed with water. Her temp comes and goes. The only way to keep it down is with acetaminophen.

Sad that some employers show no empathy at times like these. You have to do what is in the best interest of the child.

When I worked somewhere and got bronchitis and could not go to work people from work called me up and wanted me to come in not understanding that I was sick. There are people that understand and people that do not. It is very sad that there are those that do not get it. You need to stay home with the sick little girl and if they cannot understand what contagious means then they are pretty selfish.
