My Checking Account May Have Been Compromised!

United States

Got a call from my bank today. I was at work so I had to let it go to voicemail. When I got home I checked the message and it said that my account may have been compromised. They are issuing me a new card and I should receive it in the mail soon. Yay. Now I have to change all the cards on file with accounts that have that information. Thankfully I only have a few. Thinking back on where and when my card could have been compromised, one incident came to mind. In our town there were to gas stations that had skimmers attached to the pumps. I had used one of the pumps to purchase gas in August. I do check my account regularly and have yet to find any discrepancies. Guess I'll have to keep checking now. I was told that any unauthorized purchases will not go against my account. That was a relief. Have you ever had your account compromised?

Unfortunately, that can happen. It happened to me in a shop in Sweden. I knew the woman was taking way too long to do my transaction in a back room no less, and asked for my card back immediately. I didn't realize she compromised it until we returned home after visiting a few other countries. By that time, American Express had sent me a new card and left voicemails and emails. Geez!

Wow, that's so uncool. Did they reimburse you for the fraudulent charges?

@ElusiveButterfly Since it was overseas, they stoped use immediately before that witch could finish a transaction. Amex must have seen us use it in Denmark after Sweden. I don't know how it works, but it works. They would not have charged us for fraudulent use either.

No, but my credit card was stolen when I was attacked in Miami years ago. I called the free number to block the card as soon as I could. The card was used a few minutes later at a gas station, but the purchase was not debited to my account.

That was fast work on the card company's side.

@LadyDuck it would have shaken me up quite a bit and I wouldn't have been able to think straight.

@ElusiveButterfly I called as soon as I was able to speak, I would say no more than 10 minutes later my purse was stolen.

I am glad the bank caught it and you will not be charged for anything that you did not do.

Yes, I was happy for that one too. From what I understand some people do get their money eventually, but have to wait for a few days for it.

Yes, I have had my account compromised a couple times. I was always the one who caught it, though. Someone (or someones) were making online purchases so I had to call the bank and have them freeze my account and issue me a new card. Such a pain having to deal with that sort of thing.

I hope that you weren't responsible for what they purchased. From what I am seeing, many have had problems, and so far they have not been resposible for their loss. The banks take care of it.

@Srbageldog they keep doing it and seems that even if they are caught, more come in their place.

@ElusiveButterfly No, they refunded the amount back to my account, thankfully. But it took a few days for that to happen, which stressed me out. It always seems like thieves wipe will wipe out your full account if you don't catch them. One time someone did this with my Paypal account. I get email notifications every time I make a purchase using Paypal, so I was able to catch them as they were in the process of doing it. I immediately called Paypal's customer support and they were able to put a stop to the purchases, refund the amount back to my account, and then sent me a new debit card in case mine had been compromised. I always wondered if they tracked down the thief who was responsible, and if they did anything about it. You would think it would be easy to trace these thieves and prosecute them.

I did about a year ago. It took a bit of time to get everything all straightened out. Someone purchased something in Orlando for a good size amount of money. I don't know where they obtained the number but I am glad the bank was watching.

@HazySue if we went back to just using cash it would still be a problem. Many banks won't cash a check unless you have an account with them.

There has to be a way that we can stop this fraud. You would think that as advance as we are in the world of technology that we could avoid it.

@ElusiveButterfly You would think so. Unfortunately as quickly as we catch these invasions the crooks are finding a new way to invade.

No because I only use cash. I don't care for having my account electronically available. I also don't use online bill paying. I send my bill payments through the snail mail. I hope you get everything straightened out.

I do use online bill pay. Have a couple that I send off automatically. Using my card at the pump is a convenience that I have come to appreciate. Having to untether a child from a car seat, go into a busy store, bring them back out and tether them again (worse if it is raining) just isn't my cup of tea.

I had the bank do that to me not too long ago. I don't know where they figured it was compromised. I didn't see anything and my kids hadn't used the card recently. But it's their security system and they don't have to explain what happened, just so long as they didn't let it happen and kept me safe and secure.

It makes you feel more secure about your back and your money when they do discover a breech and take care of it. I have more confidence and respect for my bank as a result of this.

@patgalca thank you, I corrected it. When I am using my phone it is hard to see the characters. I often make typos and don't see them until someone points it out to me. LOL.

@ElusiveButterfly I know that feeling and I hope that everything is covered. Normally banks will cover the overdraft fees and such when this happens. I wonder if you will ever be able to find out who did it?

I have a few that I'll need to contact. It is a minor inconvenience though. I can't imagine what could have happened if they didn't notice.

@ElusiveButterfly I thought I contacted them all and then I got a notice that they were canceling my homeowners policy in Florida for non-payment, the card was rejected because it had the old expiration date, when they issued the new card it had the same number but a different date, I was able to contact them but my heart stopped when I saw it.

Someone charged over $200 to my credit card once, at a shop in California when I was in Ireland. I found out they bought a shirt and shoes, and the credit card company chased it all up once I notified them of the fraudulent transaction. I think they sent me a new card too.

@ElusiveButterfly Have you had your information frozen? I tried calling but it wasn't the right number, although it's th same number I've always called, then tried online and the site was down. That was a few days ago. Maybe they have it up and running now.

I was surprised that they caught something. I thought that I had no worries about the skimmers. Thought it happened after I had purchase my gas. Guess I was wrong.

Maybe about 15 years ago I got such a call about my credit card. It was widespread breach and the RCMP were involved. I didn't have any fraudulent charges on mine, though. But they still sent me a new card.
