Wildfires Expanding in Northern California

On Sunday, October 8, 2017, fires began to pop up in the California wine country. There were several wildfires in Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino counties, but initially they seemed controllable. In the four days since those initial fires, the wildfires have expanded rapidly and have now expanded to several more surrounding counties. Firefighters are trying to get nearly two dozen fires under control and, in some areas, they seem to be losing ground. 31 people have been confirmed dead, making this the deadliest week of wildfires in California history. That number is expected to rise as a large number of people have been reported missing. Over 3,500 homes have been totally destroyed. Most of the cell phone towers in the valley have burned down, making communication difficult. Below is what we have learned from our daughter who lives on the north side of Napa, after she spoke on the phone with one of our other daughters, who lives in New York. I have roughly paraphrased below what our New York daughter told us: "So far the fires are not near our Napa daughter, but it is very smokey and ashy where they live. Her husband has been working tirelessly to help people evacuate. Our daughter has been delivering pizza and coffee to the local Napa police, who have been working tirelessly to help direct traffic and answer all the questions people might have. Our daughter and a friend even helped direct traffic to give the officers a small break! Our daughter and granddaughter still have their sense of humor and can tell you all the things that have NOT caused the fire - dragons, witches cauldrons, etc. (It is so good to know they are still able to joke about the situation.) We are all saddened by the many many losses due to the fire. This is still in a state of emergency, so is not over yet, unfortunately." In addition to the message from our daughter, we heard last night from a friend we have been trying to reach for several days. She lives in Santa Rosa, where the fires have been the worse. She evacuated in time and is staying with her adult daughter outside of the fire zone. She does not know if her home has survived. It was a relief to hear from her. I am praying that the situation improves and the loss of life is over. This has been a devastating situation!

Most of that I heard and saw on CNN, except for the part of your daughter, granddaughter, and your SIiL. They should be commended on their awesomeness!!!! The devastation portrayed on the news is horrendous!!! I hope the fire gets put out soon and your family and friends remain safe. I heard it's pretty nasty down your way, too. How are you doing?

@DianneN - It was smoky here for a few days, but we were far enough away that it wasn't too bad. We could see the smoke (but not actual flames) from our living room, though, which was pretty scary. Wildfires are terribly destructive!

@DeborahDiane The smoke is so nasty to inhale. I hope it gets under control soon. Try to stay indoors as much as possible.

@DianneN - We are far enough away from the fires and close enough to the ocean that I don't think we will have a problem. However, I do worry about our daughter and her family. They are in the thick of it. I hope they control the fires soon.

I wish the rain would come in a put out the fires, though I think no rain is in sight. So many homes last and people devastated. the fire fighters must be e exhausted. It's helpful of your daughter to feed the police and do what she can. I know they are all tired and frightened with all that's happened. Glad you found your friend and she's okay.

@RubyHawk - Yes, even the people who survived have been terribly hurt or they lost their homes or their businesses or their jobs. It is awful for those people.

@RubyHawk - Yes, I think everyone is tired and frightened. My son-in-law came home two nights ago and spent one night at home in his own bed, before returning to the fire fight. These fires have been a nightmare for the people in that area.

@DeborahDiane So many terrible stories coming out of the fire. I heard about one woman having both of her legs amputated. People out there are really hurting.

How horrible and scary @DeborahDiane With all the modern technologies we have you'd think they find a way to transport water from regions that have too much to regions that need it desperately.

@rebelann - I agree! Wouldn't it be nice to be able to distribute water a little better. They say that in the future wars could be fought over water, rather than oil. It seems possible.

I have seen the photos online and what I see it's horrible. I can only hope that the firefighters can win the flames, the wind drops and God send rain to help the work of men. This is a tragic year.

@DeborahDiane When there are so many fires it is almost impossible for the men to control them. It's so sad.

@DeborahDiane It's such a sad situation, I wonder when they will finally be able to stop the fires. People must be scary.

@LadyDuck - We are hoping for those things, too. The fires are still spreading. This series of fires have caused the greatest number of fire related deaths from one system in California history. So terrible!

I was flipping channels last night, and I came across one of the news sites (don't remember which one) where they said that even after these fires are contained they are still going to have lots of problems with other fires because of the high winds and dry conditions. It is very unfortunate to hear this, and I hope that all the authorities and agencies battling these fires can start to get things under control. The poor US is getting hit with one disaster after another.

@moffittjc - Boy, isn't that the truth? We have had a hard summer and fall ... and still have winter ahead. No telling what that will bring in the form of snow, ice, mudslides, etc. It has been a really hard year so far. I hope winter is mild.

@moffittjc - Yes, I have heard the same thing. It does seem as if the U.S. is being hit with one disaster after another. Overwhelming! This series of fires have caused the greatest number of fire related deaths from one system in California history. So terrible! I hope things improve soon.

I read about this 5 days ago, and thought everything was over (the fire in that area). Let hope the weather changes for the better, to stop that fire spreading out further.

@vandana7 - Fortunately, the fire currently seems to be moving away from where our daughter lives. However, communities further north are now in greater danger. It is scary! This series of fires have caused the greatest number of fire related deaths from one system in California history. So terrible!

This is absolutely horrific, it is so sad to see people standing in the ruins of their home. We lost our home to a fire in 1995 and I know how it feels to lose just about everything you own. They do need our prayers for sure.

It's awful, my condolences to the many families who have lost their loved ones. I read somewhere the fires are so bad because they have had rain in the recent past and the undergrowth has grown and now dried out. This promotes more fires. Seems California can't win for losing. Rain they get fires, no rain drought.

@fishtiger58 - I can understand why you would think drought is better. However, since most of California is farmland, that does not work well, either. We need to find a better way to manage our land so it doesn't burn after we have have a year of rain.

@fishtiger58 - You are so right. We need rain, but not the fires. It is hard to figure out how we can benefit from the rain without suffering the consequences!

@DeborahDiane Sadly I don't think there is a solution, there is so much wilderness in California. But maybe drought is better.
