Yesterday I had an appointment with my Pulmonologist to get results for my Sleep Apnea Test. Boy did I get a big surprise. I thought he would just tell me I was fine and to keep doing what I was doing. I knew I was having problems but really didn't think it was related to sleep apnea. Instead I was told that I had severe complex sleep apnea. I didn't know there were different levels or different types. Apparently I stop breathing 42 times an hour on average. Oh dear. The severe apnea begins at the 30 level, oh boy, I am 12 above it. I am going back in to do another study to see what level they need to change me to to make my little stops get lower. If they can't fix it, I am looking at surgery believe it or not. I am having problems with exhaustion, confusion, heart palpitations, breathing, high blood pressure, and a few other things and they think that many of these things are related to sleep apnea. Imagine that, unrestful sleep can actually cause a whole host of problems. Can't wait to find out what they will be doing to me next. So, how the heck is everyone out there?

I was totally clueless about it. He explained a good bit of it and how it effects my life personally. I had no idea it could end up being so dangerous.

OMG, I am glad I read this discussion of yours. I never knew that this sleeping problem could be that lethal. Has any of your family members ever had this similar problem?

@YrNemo my son was diagnosed with sleep apnea when he was three. He undergone surgery to remove his tonsils. He is ok now, no more signs of apnea, no snoring, no hard breathing

@YrNemo his previous doctors thought his tonsils were infected so they always give him antibiotics, but they were wrong.

@neildc Hmmm, I had my tonsils removed too, but only because it was infected badly at the time (the doctors said!). Cool, that - removing tonsils might have helped in this apnea business.

So sorry to hear about this. Hopefully, surgery isn't needed and you just need to either lose weight or adjust your sleeping patterns to correct your sleep apnea.

Hi @allen0187. @HazySue haven't mentioned or the doctor what really caused apnea or the stopping of breathing while sleeping, in Susan's case. With my son's, I'd like to mention that what caused his episodes was his tonsils which were more than larger for his age, and was getting larger as he grows older.

@allen0817 I have sleep apnea most likely because of some of my many health issues. The apnea has made them worse, apparently they are feeding off of each other.

I'm a little aware of sleep apnea as my son in law has been dealing with it for awhile. He has a CPAP machine which helps him get a decent nights sleep. I didn't realize either how important a good nights sleep is

@HazySue I didn't realize that a CPAP would stop helping sleep apnea. Gee it's true that we learn something new every day.

@Marilynda1225 It can if you need a higher pressure of air flow.

I have been using a CPAP machine for over 6 years. At first it helped,, now not so much. I am glad it is helping your son-in-law.

Gosh, you do have a very high reading. No wonder you haven't been feeling the best. And yes, lack of sleep can have a huge impact on your general health.

@HazySue I should try and count how often Vince stops breathing. I don't notice it every night. I guess it's just when I'm having trouble sleeping. Sometimes he does complain of being exhausted when he wakes up.

I had no idea that there were different levels of sleep apnea. When he told me how many times an hour I stop breathing you could have knocked me down with a feather.

Wow I hope they get that all straightened out. When my first born was 4 months old they found he would stop breathing while sleeping. He was on a monitor for 6 months. And the alarm was so loud, to make sure to wake me. I feel like I didn't sleep those 6 months at all. Thankfully everything was fine and now he is a strapping 26 year old man.

Seven years ago I was very active on here as I was posting and searching a lot about sleep apnea. It was all for my son who was three at that time. His tonsils are big and keeps getting bigger. After the study, it shows that his breathing stops in the average of 27 if I can remember well. His tonsils were removed and now he's all very well no more signs of apnea, no more loud snores in his sleeps, no more hard breathing. I just like to share a few topics about him if you may want to see.
Hi everyone. I just want to share my happiness with our son. Finally, the Sleep Study is done with Zayzay. It happened on November 10, 2010. He slept in the...

@HazySue Now I know why and how did you get classified to severe and that is because of the many health issues you have. I hope the doctors find ways to correct your health. Get well the soonest.

I am glad it turned out so well with your son. As for me, my health issues have caused the apnea. I have heart failure, COPD, PAH, a part of my heart is no longer functioning, and there are more. I won't bore you with them all. Thank you for sending the link about you son.

I know that sleep apnea is a serious condition and should be treated as soon as possible. My husband does not have sleep apnea but very bad sleep and he has some problem related to lack of sleep.

I guess I have "severe" sleep apnea too as my sleep study said I averaged 30 times per hour. My primary care doctor looked at my chart (depression, anxiety, high blood pressure, exhaustion, snoring, etc) and suggested the possibility of having sleep apnea. I've been on a CPAP for a year and a half and it has made a world of difference. I wake up and feel HUMAN in the morning. I actually sleep through the night! And wearing it doesn't bother me at all. From the first night I slept soundly with it on.

I am glad your doctor was aware of the symptoms and acted so quickly for you. When I first found out I had sleep apnea, over 5 years ago, I loved my CPAP. I could sleep and wake up feeling refreshed in the morning. Unfortunately my apnea has progress and now it is needing some help getting under control once more.
