Last night I said I was going wild with a new countdown. Before that, though it's time for another new series, this one dealing with songs that have "mountain" or "hill" in the title. And, for clarification, songs that use hillbilly in the title aren't included. That's a separate thing completely! Meanwhile, here's today's first song. #10: Wild Mountain Honey - Steve Miller Band This was a coin flip: would it be wild or mountain? You see where the coin landed. Part of the idyllic side of Fly Like an Eagle (think about it: all of the songs on side one are dreams of sorts, from "shoe the children with no shoes on their feet" to "had my money, tell you what I'd do, go downtown and buy a Mercury or two"), when I first heard this song I thought ol' Stevie "Guitar" Miller had a head cold when he recorded it. (If you've never heard this before you'll understand what I mean by the end of the first verse.) But that's become part of the charm of this song; and, in many ways, it seems to reiterate the lyrics of a man gasping for fresh air. This is one of the great songs from one of the classic albums of the 70s. Well, I was never a fan of Miller. This is about as country as I have heard him.

I haven't heard this in a long time. Sounds like he's trying to grab some serious air.

Maybe one of the other band members was smoking something in the control room and he was trying to get a "contact high."
