Food Bank - Food?

Made a trip to the Food Bank; stood in line for 45 minutes (which made my back scream and I almost fainted). This what I received. 1 bag of rice, 1 bag of popcorn, a box of raisins, a jar of peanut butter, 2 cans of corn (which I hate), 1 can of green beans, 1 can of applesauce, a 'bag' of soup (what is that!), a 12-pack of hamburger buns, a 12-pack of hot dog buns and a box of Chocolate Chip Waffles. Yup, no CANS of soup or tuna. Wow!! My taste buds are just drooling (NOT). Can you help me figure out how to fix an actual meal from all that???? No protein, no nutrients. Geez, I can just see me adding weight on to my 105 pounds; can't you?

That would be difficult to make a meal with those items.

I guess while I'm eating one of the buns with PB on it, hopefully a commercial for a fast food restaurant will come on and I'll envision that's what I'm eating instead @LovingMyBabies .

That is an odd assortment. What about a hot dog package for those buns at least. Then on the other hand instead of those buns they could have given toaster bread. The rice OK but then perhaps some macaroni too. Well anyway I guess they figure you should be happy they give you something instead of nothing.

I appreciate that they try to help people @RasmaSandra but I guess because I live alone, I don't need much.

@nanette64 still you cannot make meals out of that. But as I said at least you do get some food.

For how many days this is supposed to last ? Absence of meat, no butter or oil, I suppose you have to buy them...

@nanette64 You have only $16/month to eat? Is it not possible to get more food from a charity or a NGO like the Red Cross ?

@topffer In my small town of 3,000 people, the Food Bank is considered "the charity" and unless there's been some kind of devastation, the Red Cross wouldn't be called into help. Because I live alone, I guess they don't think I need very much. Maybe that's why I only weigh 105 pounds vs the 135 that I should weigh for my height.

Yeah, exactly @topffer . 'Buying' anything will have to wait until the 1st of November when I get $16 in Food Stamps; then I can buy a pound of hamburger.

The one I helped out always gave a pack of meat , juice, eggs and powered milk. You could pick three things of bread and lot of deserts that were a day old. And peanut butter.

You're only 105 pounds? If so, thats very thin in my opinion. I was 105 at 17 years old, and it wasn't good even at a young age. Anyways.. thats all they gave? No meats? No ketchup? No fruits or veggies? No cereal? They obviously aren't letting you pick items, huh? Our two pantries, you get to pick. They ask you if you want this, and you either say yes or no. They have cereal, oatmeal, sugar, flour, brownie mix, cake mix, canned soup, canned veggies, canned fruits, canned sauce, different pastas, ketchup, mustard, salad dressing, hot sauce, applesauce, jucie boxes, milk, eggs, cheese, bread, bagels, meats, raviolis, fresh vegfies and fruits.

Damn, I need to move to where you are @Courtlynn . Here you get what they give; no choices. Yeah, I'm 5'8" tall and should weigh 135 pounds. I pretty much look like a skeleton with skin wrapped around the bones.

@nanette64 I hope you can put some meat on those bones.. I wouldn't be able to go to one that picks for you. As I'm a picky eater and noone should chose our food anyways as we're who eats it.

YUCCKKK that stuff sounds disgusting. I've never cooked rice, don't really like it much, I hate popcorn, never eat it, eeewww to raisins, canned corn?? greenbeans?? applesauce?? unhealthy to say the least, bein its canned and just what was in that bag of soup, just the dry ingredients? So, no hamburger or hotdogs for all those unhealthy buns ..... I think I'll avoid the one we have here, they probably only give menudo if anything which I do not eat either Butt those chocolate waffles might be almost tasty, if you like sweets that is. When I heard of the food bank way back I just figured they'd have things like dairy products and veggies, now I am not so sure that's what they'd give me.

You can cut up wieners to fit your hamburger buns. Cook rice and add to the soup. and open a can of green beans. That's not a bad meal. for another meal you can make more hot dogs, rice, and open a can of corn. you can also mix the raisins with peanut butter for a snack or to serve with your meals.

@nanette64 You know about the Gleaners? Its folks harvesting food from the farmers that other wise would be plowed under and wasted. Its also city people who have backyard fruit trees. We have made tons of applesauce from fallen, going to waste apples. Those apples will not look perfect like store fruit but dang, the sauce that they make! Fantastic.

You would have done better not going than to pick up that junk. Yes, pound adders for sure. Peanut butter is protein, and raisins are at least good for you. So is the applesauce. I would toss the rest. I wish I weighed 105. Good luck with that. You couldn't choose what you wanted? We have a pantry here, but you can choose what you want, granted the food choices aren't much better than what you have above. Which is one reason I don't go to the pantries here.

I love peanut butter - so I could have that with the buns -. PB - protein. Then I could snack on the raisins - lots of potassium there. Then I could add the green beans to the soup and have it with toasted bun. I don't eat much rice, popcorn or waffles, but boiled corn I can handle.
