Learning to Swim, Day 1

A little over two hours ago, I had my first refresher basic swimming lessons at the gym. The weather was well-appreciative in the 60s with plenty of sunshine. I was almost tempted to wear flops, but I chose not to, since it wasn't quite warm enough. But the rest of the week would be a blessing for me. I wore socks and sneaks with my spring jacket. After I paid for my lessons and purchases swim googles, I changed clothes in the locker and met Rachel, my instructor. She was real nice and friendly as we got to know each other better. I had a choice of either the lap or leisure pool to do our lessons. And I picked leisure pool to get a feel for things. After she helped me with my googles, I told her what I vaguely remembered on having swim lessons years ago, and how when I was at my local camp, I came in dead last in a swimming competition. At 12:50 PM, we've got started, when she taught me how to front float in the water. From there, I learned how to guide, kick with the kickboard, and then use my arm to propel to swim. Before time was up, she wanted me to do a lap by practing the freestyle stroke, both ways. She said it was okay, if I could come up for air by taking breaths, in which I did a bit. Overall, I did okay with my first lesson. And my back did feel better too. I won't be able to do it this Thursday, since I have my 2nd mammogram appointment in the morning. And then in the afternoon, I'm do a fire/rescue ride-along for research that afternoon for novel research. I'll be out for a few hours. My next lesson would be a week from today, when I work on breathing and my arms some more.

Awesome, keep it going, Kristen. It's been about a year since I went swimming last, must go again one day.

@KristenH I should really the pool only 5/10 minutes away. Could you swim before and just need a refresher? I thought once you can swim it's something that remains with you.

@kevin1877uk Not bad. My gym is 10 minutes away. I could float and swim underwater. But my swimming is rusty. I try to do a practice lap after water aerobics, if the leisure lanes are available.

It's okay. Yes indeed. Both appointments almost overlap time-wise. I have some little time to have lunch and then go back out. I'll be ready for next week.

It's easy to learn to swim when you are a child, but more difficult when you are grown up. I admire you for doing this and I hope it goes well.

I hope so. Not sure about Olympic quality for competitive swimming. Baby steps at my own pace.

Not quite there yet. I'll be lucky to swim one lap at my level.
