With Halloween so close, I've been watching a few old horror shows on AMC TV and other channels. I still can get scared from them and love to get comfy and watch them. I have written some reviews on old horror flicks called Retro Reviews and have almost gone through the gamut of my repertoire of movies. Remember that classic, Rosemary's Baby or The Omen or How About the old king vampire movie, The Horror Of Dracula? And I always love the vintage Hitchcock movies like The Birds and Psycho. The new ones are usually too gory, violent and bloody for me. And most lack in a good story line. With only days before Halloween, any myLot 'Horror Buffs' should start to treat themselves to a good view. With Halloween treats and a glass of wine at the ready! Pixabay 'eery' free image.

Oldies but still goodies! I miss Elvira and her Movie Macabre . . . I used to enjoy watching those kooky (sometimes tacky) horror flicks - not sure if kids of today would get a kick out of 'em. Not that this would be considered "horror", but on Netflix we've been breaking out the old Twilight Zone episodes . . . my 2nd grade son loves them . . . and Hubby and I are loving them as Halloween draws near!!!

@JohnRoberts I had to look up Svengoolie. I have not seen this show . . . never even heard of it! What is this about a rubber chicken? Is it similar to Elvira . . . if it is, I'm gonna go check it out!!!

@JohnRoberts No but I did see and watch Elvira- how fun was she? She became her own horror character---ha!

@Marymargll - I love those old, scary movies. I can't even count how many times I have watched "The Birds." I have even been to the town where it was filmed ... and there were dozens of birds on the electric lines in the town. Very creepy!

The Birds is one of the late Sir Alfred Hitchcock's greatest movies.

I love those old ones, too, and won't watch the inferior "horror" movies from the past 20 years or so. You're right, they just use shock and gore and call it horror. I saw a description that made me laugh last night when I was scrolling through the guide. "Dracula rises from the Grave" (Christopher Lee): Dracula bites (a couple of women) then falls on something sharp"!! Good to see humor in TV listings. I adored Christopher Lee as a teen in the 60s and 70s, as well as Peter Cushing. Those guys were great!

Yes and you knew you were watching a real 'horror' show- the music was always suspenseful and creepy and loud! ha!

I fully agree with you, the old horror movies were a lot better, with a good story. The new ones are only full of blood, it's not something I like.

@MarymargII The new horror movies do not really scare me, they disgust me.

No I won't watch most of them- there's only a very few decent new ones and then they scare me too much when I 'm trying to sleep.

@LadyDuck yes ..., that's true... sadly.. as all the blood and gore does not really add anything to the movie ...

I've been watching the horror movie marathon on AMC too! I am a big fan of the old classics, even going back to the old black and white films. I like the old style of horror movies, where the horror was more subtle and implied, rather than the in-your-face horror of today's movies. The old horror flicks had you on the edge of your seat because of the suspense, not because of the blood, guts and gore! And, like you said, they actually had good story lines!

Right now the slasher films are all the rage or very violent ones. They just don't have any atmosphere or mystique.

@MarymargII That's what I love about the old-time horror movies...the suspense. You never knew where or when the horror was gong to present itself. These days, you know exactly what is going to happen. Movies these days are balls-to-the-wall, in-your-face slash 'em up movies.

@MarymargII Our son used to watch Dr Who when he was about 4 but he'd hide behind the couch and peep round the side to watch.

I've been looking and there's not a lot of decent horror shows on any channels- they should really bring them back for Halloween. There was a few Stephen King ones one Saturday but that was it.

No and often just more gross--however, I do realize sometimes a little blood is necessary but they shouldn't 'overkill' with it. Excuse the pun---lol!

Vintage horror rocks. You are right in that contemporary horror has weak plots usually built on slaughtering young people with no style at all.

No that part is way, way overdone in these modern times. Too much gore and not enough good story line.
