Happy Thursday everyone! Here it is a great day since I do not work tonight - currently at the gym, will be doing some housecleaning and raking, and then will go shopping with my little sister. Should be good! So I work in a 24 hour facility and we just completed our yearly "shift bid" where one by one in order of seniority, a person picks their shift. Of course the daytime ones get eaten up immediately. Last year when I did this I was so far to the bottom I only had two options available: 1030pm to 630am (ew) or 830 to 430am (a little less ew - so I picked this) This year I had an additional option of 2nd shift, 230pm to 1030pm. I jumped on it! I have only ever worked second shift for a few months. Luckily since I dont have kids, I dont hink I will mind this so much. Night shift is good for some...but I am personally a morning person and turn into a zombie at midnight! I will miss a few people from night shift though. This new schedule doesnt start until the first of the new year. Do you have this shift bid at your job? Are you a night shifter?

Well that's cool. I do night shifts every once in awhile at work and they are 9pm-5

Thats about my shift, 830 to 430. On one hand you have your evenings free. But I feel like I end up having to waste 6 hours or so before work most days. I never slept well during this shift. At least it was consistent for me. When you do 9-5a is it consistent for a little while or you would have to bounce back and work days or middle shift immediately after? That inconsistency would be hard for me.

@maezee I did it for two weeks with day shifts peppered into it. We don't really have a full night crew or shift at my store so it doesn't happen very often.

@thislittlepennyearns was it like an inventory week? I did that once while my normal shift was mornings when i worked at a retail clorhing store and that was painful!

2:30-10:30pm is so much better. Good for you! I used to work retail back in high school and college. I did my fair share of nights and weekends. Now I work weekdays 7-2pm.

@NJChicaa Unfortunately seems like a lot of jobs require weekends or at least some weekends. I wouldnt mind every other weekend but working every weekend gets old!

I would not like working nights. Second shift eats up apl the daylight hours though so I would have chosen the first shift. Its neat how they let you chose your shift based on sinority! Is there a pay differences over the shifts? When I worked at a hospital second shift got $1 more and night shift got $2 more.

I wish we had this shift bid at my work but we don't. I work 1130-8pm so I enjoy those hours as I still have my morning to do whatever I want too. I hope you will adjust to your new hours

@maezee It's the shift i was hired for. It's the big boss that decides the shifts

Its nice if you have seniority. If you dont, it usually takes a long time to accumulate. How does your staff decide on who works what shift?

I am on duty 24/7, since I'm mommy, teacher, cook, cleaner, wife, etc!

@maezee Not last night. The babies and I are sick so none of us slept. =( Thank God it's nap time so I'm going to try to rest with them for a bit, if my body allows that.

I cannot work night shift because I am short sighted, cannot see well at night or far away. Too old for night work too

That vision thing, is that a thing? Even if the lighting is the same as during the day?
