A bad hair day for a chicken

My nephew lives on a few acres and breeds Saanen and pygmy goats. We visited there recently and I loved looking at all his livestock. Baby goats seem to have so much energy and are continually playing. His friend also breeds various types of chickens, ducks and geese. I took this photo of a frizzle chicken. Frizzles are characterised by the curled plumage whereby the feathers curl outwards instead of lying flat. The gene is believed to have originated in Asia and can be seen in breeds such as the Polish and the Pekin. In some countries it is recognised as a breed in its own right. It is normally a good layer and quite hardy although the curled feathers do not give good protection against rain.

That's for sure. And I guess any of these that don't come up to show standard get fried or baked too.

When we go to the county fair, we see various breeds of chickens . . . not sure if we've seen the "frizzle", but possibly similar ones that are poofy like that - they sure stand out in the crowd! You just want to give this one a hug!!

My grandfather loved to grow several breeds of chicken. What a shame we did not have digital camera back in time.

@JudyEv You are right, photos were expensive, limited to special occasions.

In the old days photos were very precious and not to be wasted on trivial matters although what was considered 'trivial' varied from person to person of course.

What a beauty!!! I'd love it as a pet. It must catch raindrops and develop puddles in those feathers!

@JudyEv Curious if the frizzle chicken ruffles the feathers of other types of chicken, what do you think?

@allen0187 They are probably really jealous and want to know the name of its hairdresser!

They're very 'chic' compared to your average chicken.

It certainly does. It's strange how the feathers are like this. If you mate two frizzles, a quarter will have normal feathering, half will be frizzles and a quarter will have feathers like pipe-cleaners - sort of a double frizzle. At least that's what I read.

If it wasn't for the face, I would not have known that is a chicken.

@JudyEv - I have no idea, but if you hadn't put "chicken" in the title, and I couldn't have seen the face, I wouldn't have guessed "chicken."

Most chicken breeds make nice pets though some are quieter than others.
