I dreamt I was left with a girl child..

Why I remember the dream is, my reaction was, I can't get her married... She was a baby, cute one ..a bit like little monkey. I think all newborns look like that. Actually an elderly childless couple wanted to adopt her, but were age barred. So they asked me to help them out, and I obliged by signing relevant papers. Soon they had financial problems, and I was left with the child in my arms. All I could say was, it will be difficult for me to find her a match!!! I did not voice my normal fears about holding the baby. Instead, I was obsessed about caste system in the country because in our community loads of money is needed as dowry. In other communities, they are particular about the caste. So either way, it would be an issue alright.. Funny ...my concerns should have been how will I manage her schooling ..who will go to pick her up when I am working and where will she stay when I am at the office or am hospitalized.

I have many girl children in my orphan home. By the grace of God, no one among is without proper food, dress and education!

Would you want to take on the responsibility if your dream ever comes true? Seeing so many things around I am a bit scared of having to take on any responsibility of a girl child. My daughter has now grown up and i get worried about whats happening to girls now.

@mayka123 The politicians do not have the will to stop that. Do you know that? Even muslims have dowry system in our country. Traditionally, muslims get "mehr". Laws relating to dowry were dropped the first thing when Modi government came. But Nirbhaya case, they kept on deferring it till there was no way they could do much about it.

If all those concerns including the ones that society is now thrusting upon is were controlled, definitely. But as things stand, I cannot earn 1 crore plus to find a bank clerk willing to marry her. Those are the going rates in our community. No wonder nobody wants a girl child.

Wow that shows how much the caste system is such a part of the psyche there..poor Vanny ..it would be enough to worry of how you and the baby would survive for basic needs, nevermind marriage.

You dreamed that because you love children and want to be in their life.

@jstory07 I wouldn't mind if they stayed over. Just the responsibility as it stands out here scares me.

@vandana7 Babies are great. I love having them around and when they are here I also love when they go home. You can spoil them and than send them home.

Can't people move house to another state where dowry requirement is less, and where the caste system is no longer an issue? (Perhaps that is why many Indians migrate to other countries? Don't kill me if you disagree .)

There are no States in this country without Dowry requirement and caste system. If only there was, things would improve. Migration is for money. Dowry = money. Migration = money. Everything boils down to that. lol

@vandana7 You just have to marry one of the members here who lives in a country where there is no dowry or caste problem. Much less money involved if there is such a marriage, just potential headache later . (If you went for someone who was likely to die soon, that would be wonderful, right? )

You are worried about marriage in your dream too? If she is given good education ,she can look for her life partner/ soulmate, days are not the same..

That used to be the dream. As things turn out, girls are being deliberately sent back to home with scare in ola and uber cars, and gang rapes so that caste and dowry systems do not go away. If they are educated, jobs are not easy to come by, isn't it? With that kind of environment, it is scary alright for young girls in our country.

That dream probably means you wish to take care of something or someone, or you're too afraid of the responsibilities that come with having something or someone. I sometimes dream situations where I have to solve problems, if I wake up, I'll go to sleep again because that dreamland issue gotta be solved!

LOL...not sure about that. But the tiny child sure was worth holding. lol. Somehow the dependence of children is so appealing. Same thing if an able bodied adult does it, it can get annoying. And that is an interesting take. Solving problem. Hmm. I need to think like that I suppose. :)

Considering how the caste system works, I think I can understand why the girl's marriage was the first thought that came up in your dream. The dowry there would be given only from the bride to the groom, right?

Exactly. But the thought was caste system..though in real life the reason for refusing to adopt could be the fear to accumulate dowry.

I happened to experience this too before. How I longed to have a child of my own but in my current situation it is difficult for me. I think you can still have one in the future. You are still young.

I am not. I am almost 60! But I am not sure I would want one in our country. The tendency to favor boys over girls, and then take dowries makes me get scared of girls.
