Travelers along Interstate 80 in the middle of Iowa cannot miss the billboards advertising the world’s largest truck stop. Who could not resist checking it out. The place is huge as advertised. Giant parking lot packed with cars and more big rigs than you will see anywhere else. The store is like a small shopping mall. The lower section is devoted to auto parts. Middle area is food. Endless overpriced souvenirs and whatnot. The Iowa 80 truck stop was founded by the late Bill Moon and he knew what he was doing. The place was doing big business as people were buying like crazy. Moon was also a passionate collector of vintage trucks and trucking memorabilia. His impressive collection is housed in the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum which appears to be a fairly new building not far from the truck stop. Admission is free. The interior seems the size of a football field. The sight of dozens and dozens of beautifully restored big rigs and other types of trucks is overwhelming. They sit bright and gleaming in rows and each truck is identified year and model plus other information. Walls are covered in vintage advertising signage. The collection is rather amazing. If you are a trucking or automotive enthusiast, this museum is for you.

This sounds much like the trucking museum in Alice Springs in the centre of Australia. The rigs there are all highly polished and gleaming too. I particularly liked this bit where the front of the truck projects from the wall and the rest is drawn in.

I am hoping to make it out west next year if I get the two-month vacation I did this year. I saw a feature about this onthe Tra el Channel....of course, they seldom mention the “tourist trap” aspect of places like this. I’d still like to visit it.

With a complimentary copy of "Convoy" as you depart. Sounds kind of cool.

I only saw that kind of trucks in the television but that is so good that you visited that place and enjoyed them.
