I'm home from a lovely, stunning, unbelievably beautiful trip to Gatlinburg and a detour to Cumberland Gap National Park. After all that time in the mountains it's only fitting that I present the song that's standing alone on the mountain of my favorite songs with "mountain" or "hill" in the title. Here it is. #1: She Left Me Standing on the Mountain - Delmore Brothers Coincidentally, Robbie Fulks mentioned the Delmore Brothers last night. And here they are at the top spot. Just a happy coincidence (how could you plan that?). Not only my favorite "mountain" song, but this is also my favorite Delmore Brothers song not named "Blues, Stay Away From Me." It shows what made the Delmores so successful in the 30s and during their post-WWII comeback career: hot guitar picking by Rabon on the tenor guitar and terrific harmonies. The trademark Delmore humor is in there, too: "I will keep on searching for that little maiden fair, and if I do not find her you will find my body where she left me standing there on the mountain." I love the Delmores, probably a little strange because they are so "old" (Rabon died two days before my parents got married in 1952; Alton died when I was 4). Good music has no expiration date.
