A Lovely Painted Lady

We do have a lot of old houses in our area that are called "painted ladies." Painted ladies are houses that are architecturally Edwardian or Victorian. The outside of a painted lady is painted using three or more colors, and the architectural details of a painted-lady house are painted so that those details really catch the eye of the viewer. The painted-lady house in the photo was built in 1894. It has 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and it offers 4,100 square feet of living space. Since this painted lady is in Cook County, Illinois, the $649,000 price tag for that house is a deal. If the house was located in DuPage County, Illinois, it would hover close to a million. Location, location, location!!!

Nice house. In France these kind of houses are found only in coastal towns and were holiday houses.

That's a delightful name for those gorgeous old houses. I'll have to keep my eyes open to see if we have anything similar here.

@Corbin5 I don't know so much about the Victorian style. Understandably, it belongs more to Great Britain than to the continental mainland.

I don't understand the reason for that strange nickname for those houses. However, what enhances a house, is precisely the location. This also applies to me in Italy. I can confirm it.

I suppose since ladies like to adorn themselves with a variety of colors regarding clothing and makeup, the houses got the name "painted ladies." Yes, the county I live is the most expensive country regarding housing in the state of Illinois. The better the schools in a county, the pricier the homes happen to be.

@Corbin5 Well, I'm happy for you, who live in a prestigious area. Now I understand the meaning of "painted ladies", referred to those houses.

@alberello75 We do not live in the most expensive suburbs, thank goodness. A few of the neighboring suburbs near ours have houses most of us could never afford. Our house is not a big one at all, but it is the right size for the two of us. We had a larger house when our son was growing up, though.

The house we live in was built at around the same time. The style is called Art Nouveaux, though.

@Corbin5 It was sold last year. It cost 120.000 Euro = 106.114 British Pound. Everyone says that that was a bargain. Behind the house is even a garden. Yet, such old houses may be full of negative surprises regarding repairs. We live at the top, the owner and his family in the middle, his parents on the ground floor (first floor in the USA). We've known the owner since he was two years old. His parents moved into the house with him. Then three more children followed.

@MALUSE The sale price does sound like a bargain to me, but you are right about the negative surprises. It is so nice to know the owner and that the house has been part of the family for a long time.

In our area, it is the highly-rated school districts that put a higher price on a home. We moved from a neighborhood with schools with an average rating, and now we live in a highly-rated school district. Our home was much bigger before, but the smaller ranch home we live in now is priced higher than the big house due to the school district.

It is an interesting home. My favorite house we had was in Oak Park, IL, our first house. It was built in 1918 and we really like it due to all the beautiful woodwork and leaded glass windows, but it was not in the best of neighborhoods to raise children, so move we did.

I like the structure but not the color, blue just isn't my idea of what I'd want my home to look like. As for the price, uhhh nope, I'd do other things if I had that kind of money.
