Do you have a plan?

After the guy shot up the church his mother-in-law attended yesterday I started thinking about my own church. What if that happened here? So I called my dad (he's the pastor), and much to my surprise and relief, the church has a security plan in place, and already has security measures I never knew about. This shooting has prompted them to call a meeting to go over the procedures again, but I was relieved to know this had already occurred to them. I asked my sister about her church, and she said while she didn't know if her church did, the school their church ran, did have a plan(she used to teach there). Do you guys know if your work, church, or school has a plan of action? Obviously, a lot of places have security cameras, but as we all know that doesn't seem like much of a deterrent. *You can obviously post about what you want, but this discussion isn't meant to rail against people, places, or things. It is just about the "what if".

We're such a small country church, we don't have any kind of security. We don't even lock our doors. But we may have to take a look at things now. So tragic.

I never would have thought about it because we're small, and everybody knows everybody. But maybe every church should talk about it.

@AmbiePam You're right. No one is immune from evil any more.

But what if the person doing it, belongs to the church and knows about the plan . Cams won't help if they know about them too.. drom being insider. And sadly, alot of them are from inside.

At this current point in time i don't go to a regular work place, school or church..so I guess I don't have a plan..I think churches need to put one in place though as there seem to be a bunch of armed nuts out there.

My dad and his wife are members of a church in a large urban area. Even before the shooters, they had to lock many entrance doors and have the "ushers" roaming the halls due to people with addictions coming in and trying to steal things or obtain money.

Our schools do lock down drills as frequently as they have fire drills these days. That's where the school locks down and kids have to hide in the case of a shooter. It disgusts me that my children live in a world where they have to do this.. but then again my mom used to have bomb raid drills and hide under her desk.. As I work in a bank we've always been prepared for a shooter, because obviously that's like the #1 expectation at a bank. Thankfully I've never been in a robbery situation and I hope I never will.

My synagogue has a plan as do all the schools in my state. Even so, you never know what a psycho nut job will do.

So sad. Though I am happy there is a security plan in place. They say that if you have thought about what you would do in an emergency , ahead of time it goes better if you actually are ever in one

Our little church does not have a plan. All the school districts I have worked in for the last fifteen years have had "lock down drills". Other than that, I do not know. Even the preschool where I was over twenty years ago had a security code that could be used on the intercom. It was originally intended to alert staff of an "acting out" or behavior situation in kids, but could be used for any warning. It was called as a code. For the code there they used the name of the therapy dog. So if a Code Fido (cannot remember the actual name) was called our action team was to deal with a situation.

In our office we have CCTV cameras on certain places. And no strangers can enter the area without first getting permission from the security guards.

That's an interesting thought. Like the fire drills we had in school and have in the work place, shouldn't these plans be made known to the congregation? It could be put into the bulletin or since most bulletins are posted online, it could be announced at the end of a Sunday service. People should be allowed to meet in small groups to go over the plan, understand it and practise it.

@AmbiePam That sounds like a very well thought out plan, and sadly, it is so needed for our safety today isn't it?

I'm glad your church has a security plan in place. I attend a small church. I don't know what is in place for these kinds of situations.

When there are people around who shoot people I think them safety is what one should be worried off. One should feel safe first.

Yes. this is not a deterrent for a criminal. The best plan is not to allow a foreigner inside a Church and to other holy places.

We find comfort if we know the place we are working or visiting is safe. It's like at home.
