Never seen such like down our way.

Now here's a thing I want explained but am having no luck with. I'm reading a book and the writer notes that in a certain area of Paris made-up youths with an unsteady gait exhibit an "inexplicable hint of spiritual syphilis on their faces". The picture he tries to paint with his words just won't form in my mind. What on earth is spiritual syphilis, and what does it look like?

Got me. I've never heard of such a thing. But we seem to live in a time when people are creative about making things up.

Perhaps a red blush in the cheeks? Not at all flattering in my view. Actually I have no clue as to this strange metaphor.

I wouldn't even know what non-spiritual syphilis looks like!

Holes in the soul, a reference to the lesions common when the condition has reached its tertiary stage?

Poetic licence I'd say. And/or trying to be obscure and clever.

I'm not sure what's being implied. But, it's obviously a form of rebellion again what has always been considered 'normal.'

No matter how much I try to make my imagination work, I cannot make a picture of "spiritual syphilis". They should ask the writer to draw a picture.
