I had a very exciting and full weekend, MyLot. :-) As part of it I saw the movie "My Friend Dahmer" at the theater. Now this is quite lucky as the movie is independent and not being shown at many theaters, so fortunate am I to have it at a movie theater near me. Incase you didn't know the name - Jeffrey Dahmer was a real serial killer active from the 70s-90s in the midwest. He was especially noted for the gruesome things he did to his victims after they were killed. In the interviews I've managed to see about him - even he was confused as to why he did those things. Furthermore he was apologetic (not that it at all makes up for it, just that it makes it interesting), well spoken and well... didn't look like a monster like I expected him to. I had read the graphic novel by "Derf" Backderf of the same title. "Derf" had went to highschool with Dahmer and for a brief period of time was one of a very small group who had befriended Dahmer. The book was - Original. Haunting. Chilling. At times funny even, and at times a coming of age story. And the movie did not disappoint. It shows how a maladjusted kid slipped off into madness. While Dahmer wasn't abused as a child - he did suffer some neglect and strange behaviors from his mother who struggled with mental illness, and his dad later admitted in an autobiography that his dad had struggled with odd fantasies and nightmares of violence though hadn't acted on them. So perhaps Jeffrey Dahmer was doomed by his genetics and by the quasi-abandonment. Or perhaps something just went wrong in his head one day. Dahmer only found the small group of friends through acting strange at school - staging these weird prank "fits". A group of nerds thought he was funny and accepted him until his behaviors became too dark as Dahmer began drinking (possibly as a way to deal with the dark impulses and fantasies he had that later turned into the crimes he committed.) While the real Dahmer in an old interview once said that he didn't think there was anything that anyone could have done to stop him ... I think this movie serves as a cautionary tale. Adults should take notice if a kid isn't behaving right or is drinking to excess - instead of sweeping them under a rug. Technically - they did stray from the book several times, which part of it was to tell the story more efficiently. Some reservations that people have had is that the movie may glorify a monster and that it may be ultra violent. I don't think the movie glorifies Jeffrey Dahmer. Instead it tells a real perspective from someone who personally knew him. Of course there is no excuse for the terrible things he did in his life and he was a monster. But before he was a monster he was a kid, with some dark thoughts that might have been helped. Additionally the movie itself is not gory or extraordinarily violent. The bulk of the story takes place before Dahmer's first murder which is only hinted at. That said - I do wish there would have been somewhere a thank you or sorry, or special note to the victims families and survivors of Dahmer out there. Further interesting notes: The movie was filmed at the real Dahmer's boyhood home. (nice looking mid-century home) Excellent acting by Ann Heche and Ross Lynch. The later of which I hadn't heard of, but apparently he is a big Disney channel star he did excellent in this what was likely a big departure from his usual roles. Excellent soundtrack Here's the trailer:

I remember reading about him when all this happened. So horrifying from someone so disturbed. I'm not interested in seeing this.

@Ganma7 He was nightmare worthy. I'm with you liking more uplifting movies including a good drama.

Me either. I was so upset when I found out I had nightmares for a long time. I like comedies, love stories and musicals

Wow, this must have been a good movie, a frightening one to see! Geoffrey Dahmer was very sick, doing what he did, to young boys. He was definitely suffering from mental illness and a very dangerous human being:(

It was a really good movie, one of those that sticks with you after you watch it for a long time. Haunting, really. He was depraved - a monster beyond words or description. However he also tried to take responsibility , blamed himself, was sorry (of course... to what extent?)... unlike some of the other serial killers. I guess only God knows now if his repentance was sincere....

@FayeHazel He didn't want to be executed for his heinous crimes! Repenting was his last hope, to have the judge lighten up on him, for all those convictions!:(

@FayeHazel Those inmates in prison, don't allow the men to survive, if they've done harm to a child in any way.

I remember him most for eating people. I guess he can't complain if he found hair in his food.

Indeed. I don't think he was ever allowed to complain about whatever food he got served later in life.

it does seem that kind people like us are more obsessed with terrible people trying to figure how someone could ever get so cruel. even occasionally taking sympathy for them. but the bottom line we forget is we could have been the same if we allowed ourselves to only think of ourselves in life. but i will likely watch it since i still wonder so often about the cause.

@FayeHazel the thing that haunts me most is the young kid that got away and the cops actually believed Dahmer's story that it was his kid and let him take him back, then he killed him. horrible thought

@bunnybon7 I know, isn't that horrible? Even worse, Dahmer had told the police that the boy (aged 14 I think) was his lover.... the police just took his word for it - not even calculating that the boy was clearly under aged. How horrible they must feel today for delivering the kid right on back to the monster.

It's true ... it's fascinating in a morbid way. I do have a huge amount of pity for the lost kid who struggled with dark thoughts. But all of my pity for him ends when he commits his first murder. I am sad that he wasn't helped earlier in life and that he turned into that. I'm sad for all of his victims families and his 3 survivors who will never be the same for it.

This was a great review that you gave, but just not a movie I would watch. It creeps me out that sometimes the dark side of a person prevails over the light. That there is such madness in a person.

Thanks... it was very sad, for the victims -- and -- even for Dahmer. Sad that he couldn't be helped before he became violent.

@bluesa The whole thing has made me think even about Dahmer's parents, step-mom and brother. I know that his dad and step-mom have said they loved him - even after his horrible deeds... how confusing to have a family member who did that bad of things -- and yet still fight with the idea that is their son who the love still

I've never heard of this movie. It does sound horrifying but also sad knowing that it might be related to his family background and genetics. Things probably could turn out differently if he got the right help at the right time earlier in his life.

It was a very powerful movie ... haunting. Sometimes I think of the pain his family must be in... knowing that their son did this. I wish he could have been stopped

Even though it's not my type of movie it is interesting to try to understand why someone becomes as insane as Dahmer

So true... fascinatingly, even Dahmer himself didn't seem to understand why he did those things or how it started

National Public Radio had the author on today. Fascinating interview. It brought back to me someone that I knew as a kid right out of high school. I've always wondered since what happened to Al- did he find his way in life or did he act out even more??

This is not a story that I would like to see as a film. Dahmer was straight out of a nightmare. I wish his madness had been caught before he started killing.

So true. I have great pity for the lost kid who had dark thoughts. But my pity ends when he crossed the line and did his first murder.

I have read about this movie and greatly interested in seeing it. Singer Ross Lynch starred in the Disney series Austin & Ally and to say this is a departure role is a vast understatement.

I hope you get to see it. I was very impressed with the movie, and in Lynch's performance. He was totally compelling as a kid slipping into madness, and I imagine if you know his other works (I don't) - it's even more impressive to see him pull this off
