Hong Kong Obsession

Have you ever been obsessed with a specific country? Perhaps not literally obsessed, but you get the picture, no? For a while this year, I was really into Hong Kong. I saw that it was at the top of the list of countries with economic freedom, so I wanted to learn more about this place. Technically HK is not a country, but in practice, it very much functions like its own country. It has its own laws and almost complete control over all functions of government. I learned that Hong Kong went from a pretty rough place to live in to one of the most developed regions in the world. They have one of the highest IQs and the longest life expectancy. They are much more developed than China (mainland). They are also the most "vertical" city in the world because they have so many skyscrapers. Unfortunately, the government completely owns all land in Hong Kong, which is an obtrusion to their otherwise mostly free market economy. Some of their main problems occur in housing where individuals must live in cramped space. They have some other problems too, such as friction with mainland China. I learned all of this during a time in which I was "obsessed" with Hong Kong. How about you, any countries that you fixated on and learned stuff about? Also, feel free to discuss anything you know about Hong Kong or what I said about it.

Cool. I don't think I've ever watched one of those movies. I really should! I watched a documentary once... more than one actually. Also, I think the Ghost in the Shell movie was filmed in part in Hong Kong. Pretty cool eh?

It can't be completely like we see in movies but the screen shots are assume. Another large city which I find interesting is Tokyo, Japan.

@Bluedoll Yes, Tokyo is pretty cool. Japan is popular amongst Westerners thanks to anime and video games that they export.

I could never live in Hongkong. I suffer when I'm together with too many people in a small, confined space.

I think there are some less populated areas. Also, I think something like 75% of the region is nature. The city is what gets most of the attention though.

Thanks for such an interesting well written post on Hong Kong. I never understood how government can own land that is privately developed.

@Metathresh That has been something that has always bothered me. Can't explain why some interesting topics don't get attention. All I can say is keep trying?

@Bluedoll Maybe people are too lazy to read a long, somewhat intellectual post :)

Thanks. I didn't get much interaction though. I guess people here don't really like that sort of post. Anyway, I appreciate your praise.

My son-in-law visited Hong Kong, about seven years ago. He really liked it! Their movies are violent.
