Happy 131st Birthday To The Hole Puncher

Philippines
November 13, 2017 9:19pm CST
The Google Doodle is a new image or video that celebrates a person, event or thing that you see, instead of the usual Google logo (if it's your home page). Today, November 14, I noticed that the Google Doodle is celebrating the 131st anniversay of the hole puncher. If you click on the Play button, the puncher will punch holes on a blue sheet of paper, then it will start dancing. In the Philippines, we just call it puncher, like "Nasaan yung puncher?" (Where is the puncher?). I would pinch the paper or document in half at the top, then align the fold to the arrow in between the holes to make sure it's centered. I've used two-hole and three-hole punchers at home and at work. I remember the ticket puncher when I rode provincial buses in the past. When I took my shoulder bag to Mr. Quickie (Shoes and Bag Repair) to have holes added to the strap, they used a leather hole puncher with spikes. Those are the only types of punchers I've seen, based on different types of punchers I saw on Wikipedia. I learned something else - Chad is not just a male name. Per Wikipedia, a chad is also "the fragment sometimes created when a hole is made in a paper, card or similar synthetic materials, such as computer punched tape or punched cards." The New Hacker's Dictionary calls is "Card Hole Aggregate Debris." The Google Doodle Hole Puncher 131st Anniversary is not shown all over the world today. When I went to the Google Doodle website, the map shows that in Central and South America, it is only shown in Cuba and Brazil. In Asia, it is only shown in India, Taiwan and the Philippines. It's not shown in Africa at all. It seems to be shown in majority of Europe. I've attached the link in this post.

@hereandthere yes it is small and cute. i don't bring it along now. i don't hang it around my neck with the small stapler, my trodat, penlight, and my 2 IDs. my neck might get longer or elongate like a goose. hahaha!

I also checked on it a while ago. The puncher shown is the one that bus conductors are using to punch holes in bus tickets.

@hereandthere the puncher which is commonly used in the office is this one. This is the puncher that we have at home. We use it for my children's projects in school or if we compile some things.

Wooooo!!! Happy birthday hole puncher! I know it's that time when people are starting to go 'paperless' and things like that... but this makes me happy that paper is still around, and therefore the puncher is not yet obsolete. Haha. I've only every seen and used two-hole and single-hole punchers. There are those with 3 holes? And word for the day - chad. Though I expect I'll forget that shortly. Hahaha.

@hereandthere Ahhhhh, right. I always just thought you have to buy specific holed papers for those binders. Now, why didn't I think you'd be able to punch holes on normal paper to make them fit in those binders? D'oh!
• Philippines
22 Nov 17
yes, the 3 hole puncher is long and it's for the 3-ring binders. you punch the side of the paper, instead of at the top
