If a young adult , who was raised in a traditional home with two parents, commits a felony/crime and ends up in Prison, does that make the parents look bad? Does it show that the parents failed in their parenting skills?

It's not just the parenting, it's also things that happen outside of the home. Of course discipline at a young age helps but you can do everything right as a parent and some kids are still going to do whatever they want to do when they grow to be an adult.

True, parents can set good examples but a child can still choose the wrong path once they are on their own.

Perfectly said Jennifer. We can only to do much as a parent. We can not make their decisions for them.

This is probably a bad way to do it, but when one kid goes bad I think, oh, it can happen to even the best parents. When two kids go bad I question the parenting. Of course it is far more complex, but that is my initial thought.

Yes, you could question the parents if two or more kids go bad.

Even good families raise children that end up bad. It happens which is sad.

Nope. Parents only raise us til we're adults, so whatever we do as adults, is based on us. Plus many are raised good but go through hard times. Nothing to do with how we were raised.

True, adults do make their own choices, weather good or bad.

I'd say, definitely 'NO.' Parents can only set a good example for their children. Then, the personal choice is up to that child, whether they will follow this good example or do their own thing.

@LeaPea2417 That's why a loving home can have three wonderful kids and one, who does things however he/she pleases.

This one hits close to home, with 8 kids we have had 2 that no matter what we did, what help we got them, it just did not matter and they are still that way for the most part. So I have to say no, all raised in the same house, the same way, the same parents and yet these 2 just didn't follow the law and do what was expected of them. I used to think over and over what did we do wrong. Figured out it isn't us as if it was they would all be like that. Not sure why but sometimes they even as adults think they are above the law or something. 1 of them just went to jail and will be sitting for 2 months this time. The longest was 5 years, I'm like did that not teach you something!? Love him but drives me nuts!

@LeaPea2417 I could only hope I don't get it and nothing I can do and I go from being mad to sad, he just never seems to learn.

I really find difficult to answer that because when kids turned into adult their own decision making starts to run and influences from outside activities and gatherings can affect it too

In a way, yes but outside influence also played a role in shaping the children.

I'm presuming you mean two parents who have tried to do the right thing. However you bring up your kids once they get to a certain age you really don't have much say in what happens next. I don't think they should be blamed at all.

If a child behaves badly I might wonder about parenting. But even with children, some are so much easier than others. Once an adult, there can be no more blaming of parents. IMHP

I have seen some parents keep a thumb on their children and when they turned 18 we wild, ended up in trouble. I have also seen children from wealthy families that had everything and freedom, commit murder. So nope! its not always the parents, people have a mind of their won and they will use it no matter if its for or against the parents ways of raising them.

No. If parents raise their children the right way and they still go do a crime and end up in prison it's on them not the parent. People make their own choices and if their choices land them in prison it's on them not the parents. If the person does a horrible crime like murder and the parents defend them then i would say it makes them look really bad

There are so many factors and things that can make someone commit a crime. The family home life may have affected the person, but maybe there were other things too. It's just so hard to say. I guess it just depends on the person.

No I don't think so. Only parents are not responsible for it. At certain age a kid doesn't listen to his or her parents all the time. He or she learns several things from the people he she meets outside.

No, I have known very good parents with more than one children and one of their children was a "black sheep". This does not make them bad parents, because all the other children were good.

Peer group pressure can be more influential than parenting. It often starts during puberty.

That is true. Some kids & teens can not say no to their peers and follow along even if the peer is leading them down a bad path. They want to fit in and are scared if they say no, they wont have any more friends.

Not all are because of bad parenting. Some kids just are rowdy and bad mannered and do not listen to their parents advice they are just too hard headed that they cannot change.
