Tip on keeping a wash machine clean

Years ago I didn’t know that a washing machine needs cleaning from the inside. I thought that because of cleaning products circulating through, the washing machine should always be clean.
But a technician who helped me install few things at home, assured me that washing machine that is not regularly cleaned could be moldy inside. And because of hard water, calcium might build up and damage the machine in the long run.
So he showed me a simple way to clean it by pouring vinegar in the bleach dispenser and let the washing machine work on hot water program. Repeat that every 3 months (depending on how often you use your washing machine).

How is it being done? Pour how much vinegar over how much water into the washing machine and let it run like washing clothes?
I will tell the laundry woman to do this after she is done washing the clothes in the washing machine.
