Will we still have Malls 5 years from now?

Over here in the USA, malls were a nice big thing. At least they were when I was a child. I can't tell you how many weekends were spent with friends and family hanging out at the mall. It had a movie theater, snack bars, dollar stores, Walmart, and other big anchor stores. Now a days, they are getting empty. Stores are closing/ going bankrupt. My town put its chamber of commerce in the mall to help boost activity and cut down on expenses. With many big stores closing in towns, its turning even more malls into ghost towns. Are we going to lose the mall as a hang out? Does your town or city have a mall? is it busy? What kind of shopping centers do you have? Is it normal compared to your country?

I know. It seems scary that a few news reports said this black friday sales or lack there of, may be the only difference between some major companies being in business another year or going bankrupt. Even Toysrus is having issues!

@Daelii It is definitely scary..what is happening? Are we doomed to be locked indoors only doing business on the internet?

@TiarasOceanView That seems to be what people want. We all got the choice to shop where we want to and its no wonder if we put our money online/ in big companies that are not even in our states/city... that money will be taken away from our local places.

It's scary that some of the big stores have gone out. But the malls here still seem to be going strong . . . in fact in our area/Valley they are trying to remodel/update many of them. It's as if they are trying to reinvent the mall . . . they are making sporting/park-like areas and living spaces - perhaps to entice more people to go there? One area will be erecting a new outdoor "mall". Now the uproar is about too much traffic coming here . . . we all love the mall hangouts, but we don't want our Valley to turn into a madhouse shopping destination.

That sounds really cool about the outdoor mall! I really like the idea of including sporting/parks into it as another great way for social interacting. I wouldn't mind seeing that at the local mall here. The one in a nearby city thats much bigger population actually has a kids play zone in the middle of it. Its nice for toddlers to unwind a bit

@Daelii It is cool . . . they are indeed marketing these places to "bring people together". But of course this is in hopes for them to make more $$$. One such extension of a local mall is very cool . . . they have a free trolley system that can take you there and it's a beautiful place to walk around - a chic outdoor shopping area. However the shops and restaurants are rather pricey . . . and I hear rumors that business is not so good there. It has a kid zone, fountains, classic outdoor game areas, ponds . . . it's a lovely place to go to . . . um, but not to actually shop .

my home city has three small malls - internet shopping is a threat to many shops sadly

Most of the malls are closing because of the superstores that everything you can think of in them.

Here in Riga, Latvia we have too many malls. Some of them I have seen have empty stores because people just cannot afford to spend money in malls all the time. I have not seem too many teens hanging out in the malls.

@Daelii you know I live in the suburbs so I don't really know where teens hang out. I have seen them when I am in the city in some city parks or squares. As for shoppers especially families if they make purchases they do it at hypermarkets here that sell everything from food to light bulbs etc.

Are the shoppers in your country going more to the online world than in store? what do teens usually do to hang out with friends?

I think malls will exist but just at a greatly reduced number. They will be more specialized shopping.

Don't we still have markets? We still have printed newspaper in this time of internet? Yes there will be, 5 years cannot change.
