Singer, composer and actor Mel Tillis has passed away in a hospital in Ocala due to respiratory failure on Sunday. Tillis was 85 years of age. My memories of the late Mel Tillis was his acting work on motion pictures "The Villain" and "Cannonball Run" where he stuttered due to an illness he suffered as a child. Tillis was a successful singer, actor and songwriter who was inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2007. Rest in peace Mel. You will be missed beyond words by your fans.

What a songwriter. I have one of his songs (that he, oddly enough, didn’t write) on my 100 favorites list: “Brand New Mister Me.”

@Deepizzaguy — being the country music geek, I knew him more as a songwriter and a singer than an actor.

Mel was famous around the 1970s era from his movie roles. He overcame his habit of stuttering as a child to become a famous musician and actor.

@marlina — never heard the song “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town”? Mel Tillis wrote that.
