I want to know how the Christmas Tree has got the name? What do you do with Christmas Tree? Is it good to pray in front of a Christmas Tree? If it is so, what is the proper time? Even in Indian also there is a season where a plant is worshipped. The name of the plant is TULSI. This is worshipped in the months of mid-November to December.

In pre-Christian Europe, there seems to have been a tradition of decorating the house with greenery around the time of the midwinter festival, probably as a symbol of the rebirth of the Sun. The tradition of bringing a tree indoors and decorating it is relatively recent and originated in Germany. Before that, it seems that trees were sometimes decorated and lit with candles but nearly always outside. The tree is NOT an object of worship and one doesn't pray to or in front of a Christmas tree. It is used as a symbol only. Christmas carols are sometimes sung around it and the Christmas presents are traditionally put under or around the tree ready to be distributed on Christmas Day (or sometimes Christmas Eve).
The history of Christmas Trees, when they became popular and what they mean and represent at Christmas.

Thanks. Good information. We keep some sweets and other items under a Tulsi plant and distributed as PRASAD to the inmates.

@shivamani10 I wonder whether the fact that Hindus consider Tulsi (or 'Holy Basil') as being an avatar of Lakshmi and therefore symbolic of womanhood has any association in the minds of Christian Indians with the Virgin Mary and therefore with the birth of Christ.

@owlwings The interpolation of such things may drive us to accept 'One Religion in the world' concept.

According to what i have read, fir tree was traditionally used as Christmas tree and it probably begun about thousand years ago.It was used to celebrate winter festivals by Pagans and also Christians. Nowadays, Christmas tree is used as a symbol for Christmas season. Here in the Philippines, you can see giant Christmas trees. There are some which is as tall as 3-storey building or even 7- storey building. Last year, the tallest Christmas tree here has a towering height of 172.5-ft, equivalent to a 17-storey building. It was built in Tagum City, Philippines.

My God...172.5 ft..Great about that. How tall can they grow generally? Was it decorated one or an original tree?

@shivamani10 Those giant Christmas trees are not real trees. They are built and decorated. They are made of recycled materials or native materials.

It releases oxygen and purifies the air. It is generally kept in front of the house's main door at a distance of about 10-15 feet. Some people predict the future of the residents just by observing this plant in front of the house.
